Radio Ideas
So the expensive Custom Audio sound radio burned up in my truck and I really don't want to fork out the $235 to replace it. I'm actually thinking of finding a good looking vintage cassette deck to replace it. Or hanging my FM 8track deck under the dash and using a radio delete. I used the FM 8track in my '66 Charger for several months and was impressed with the quality of the radio. The 8 tracks sound like ass though. I really like the dim yellow glow of the old radios with the tuner needle and the static you get in a lightning storm. The obnoxious bright green glow of the digital display on the Custom Audio radios doesn't fit and is kind of annoying.
Does anyone have any pictures or ideas of radios in there trucks? Any suggestions? Thanks. Last edited by vintagetin; 10-23-2012 at 10:56 PM. Reason: Wanted to add something. |

Re: Radio Ideas
I've been wondering the same thing. My truck has an old solid state radio in it that isn't working right now. It should be interesting to see what ideas come up!

Re: Radio Ideas
I too like that dim glow from the old radios. I'm just going to replace the capacitors in the original GMC faced radio that shipped with mine and run it like stock.

Re: Radio Ideas
I like the ideas that Drtyrat30 and Dino63 did. Aux Cord straight to amp (I think) you can run off of IPod or phone that has aux port. if anyone has any diagrams or more info for that setup please chime in.

Re: Radio Ideas
There is a really good thread in the 73-87 section about modifying your original radio to play an iPod through. I can't remember the title but it's worth checking out.

Re: Radio Ideas
I dont have any photos but what i did with my 63 gmc with the original radio was take off the knobs and face plate and then took a aftermarket cassette deck circa 1990 and took it apart and moved the volume knob over and intalled the original to the cassette fase plate. the display is digital and will glow behind the original face plate and you can still see the stations. however you cant switch to am and I had to remove the tape deck portion but now days everyone has there music on an I-pod and for that you can just get a rf thing that will broadcast a signal from your ipod to the radio on whatever station. they go for around $10 and it is wireless. I already had the tape deck from a nother car and so the cost was nothing except some time. I even used the same knobs adn then make a twin 4 inch speaker for the original speaker grille in the dash. I can try and get photos later of the installed unit. the radio I used was similat to this.

Re: Radio Ideas
Ok go to jalopy journal
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/?p=11082 I did this with mine...original 65 am radio..took guts out, use left power switch of old radio to turn on 12 volt to underseat amp. Glued pointer knob of am radio to the middle. Took out the selector stuff from radio and epoxied in PAC LC-1 and PAC IS75. I hide the ipod cable in the ash tray when not in use. Works great, plays my iphone tunes, charges my iphone, is controlled by original am radio and knobs..(light in radio still works). The only odd thing is that the station selector knob is now my volume knob. Volume even gradually goes to zero as a call comes in. |

Re: Radio Ideas
Mine. It's the Original Delco AM Radio, and it still works! I never had to touch it. It takes about 1 minute to warm up but she sounds great. All I ever done was to buy a speaker from Radio Shack and put in her, because the original was bad. It's either a Factory or Dealer install. Kinda rare. If anyone is interested in having thier factory radio rebuilt or converted to AM/FM stereo with outputs, try these guys: www.antiqueautomobileradio.com www.bobsradio.com More Stuff: http://www.radiosforoldcars.com/newradio0F.htm http://www.turnswitch.com/radio1.htm http://taymanelectrical.com/ http://www.wonderbarman.com/codes.html http://www.wonderbarman.com/ And don't forget: http://www.chevychevy.com/pages/55_87_Chevy_Truck.htm

Re: Radio Ideas
I always wanted to use an old radio but cut the face off and make it hinged and hide a modern system behind it.

Re: Radio Ideas
Come someone with a bit more experience tell me if the faceplate size and shaft spacing of a 70's vintage AM/FM Delco radio is compatible with a 1963 C10 dash? I want something that looks more or less period correct but don't want to spend a left one on the correct tube-type radio from back in the day. The Delco AM/FM stereo radios from the 70's and early 80's are decent and plentiful.
I apologize in advance if my search-foo failed me and this information is already posted somewhere. I have spent a good bit of time in the "Truck Audio" forum but it's pretty quiet over there. Thanks...ned.

Re: Radio Ideas
I have a nice full option modern radio for mine I got from a pawn shop cheap. Has a remote to run it. plan it to mount it under the seat with the speakers behind the seat. Not sure if I will run a radio delete plate of a stock radio. gonna put the remote in the ash tray to store it.

Re: Radio Ideas
had the radio I scored from the junk yard converted to am/fm stereo. It also has mp3/iPod jacks in the back. also figured out that while listening to pandora on my iPhone and getting a phone call i can talk on speaker phone and the audio comes through the speakers in the cab. While installing it I realized that my dash was cut so I made a little trim piece to go around the face to cover up the hack job. It works well and sounds great. get a ton on compliments on it....my dad just got his done on his corvette. he loves it.

Re: Radio Ideas
This is my solution....for now.
I found an older AM/FM Cassette (Good Quality) and took it apart. I disabled and disconnected the cassette drive....to make needed room..... Then I took a stock AM GMC (Delco) radio bezel and grafted it onto the body of the AM/FM set up.....hit it a few times with a mallet to de-stress the mod's... And then modified some knobs...the rest is sure history. Most functions (other than Cassette) work fine, either with the knobs or the push-buttons. It is just an AM/FM radio, but it sounds great and looks pretty good, too. And...it sure was cheep.

Re: Radio Ideas
In my son's truck he had the radio delete, and wanted to keep it, so we installed a jamming new 8-track under the dash.
Just kidding! The volume knob rotates and latches the face shut. |
