1964 6 lug to 5 lug
I want to convert my 64 Chevy from 6 lug to 5 lug. I am going to lower it also, so I know i can convert the front easily with one of the many disc brake kits available. But, what do I need to do on the back? Can I just swap out drums? Or, do I have to put a later model rear end in?
Thank you |

There are a lot of options. Most people seem to either redrill or just replace the axles. You can swap it out for a number of other options, just be careful on your width.
I am using a posi disc rear from a '94 Caprice Cop car that I got of CL for $50.

I wasn't sure if redrilling was safe. That seems to be the easiest. What year did 5 lug start if I wanted to swap axles?

Re: 1964 6 lug to 5 lug
You won't be able to swap out to a factory 5 lug axle, which started in '71, because they are roughly 1/2" longer. GM did this to compensate for the slightly wider track width in the front created by incorperating the disc brake spindles the same year. There are a few suppliers that offer aftermarket replacements in 5 lug. Early Classic sells Dutchman Motorsports alloy axles (around $300), but they are upgraded to a 30 spline end. If you go this route, they also carry new spider gears for the rear end carrier that have the corresponding 30 spline holes. This also increases the load capabilities of the axle. It's not all too complicated changing the axles, just need basic hand tools.

Re: 1964 6 lug to 5 lug
You can swap the whole thing real easy. But as stated, the '71 rear is wider. Not a bunch, but something to make note of. I know there is a FAQ about rear end measurements on this site.
