67 454 swap?
I have a 67 c10 that was a factory six. It had a small block in it when i got it. The small block is a locked up mess, so I now own a 454 th400 combo. Iremoved these from a 73 truck. I am a little worried about the perches so i took the 73 pair. Anybody have info on engine position and trans clearance? I have the low hump. Not concerned about drive shaft. Just want an idea of what I am in for. Thanx

Re: 67 454 swap?
I'm no expert but all the big block trucks I've seen have the high hump in them. I would use the 72 only perches. 73 and up will work but a little mod like spacing the top of the mounts on top of the frame. Someone with more experience will chime in.

There is plenty of clearance between the valve covers and firewall, BUT we have to use electric fan/s because of clearance to the radiator...and his insistance on serpentine with the long water pump. He is happy with that tradeoff. Also, this is a low hump cab. Here's a couple pics Last edited by ImNoSpaz; 11-19-2012 at 11:12 PM. |

Re: 67 454 swap?
The motor mount towers for a sbc and bbc are different. It would be worth your time and money to buy a set of towers to match the engine you plan on dropping in, IMO. I learned the hard way when I attempted to put a 454 in a 68 that had sbc towers. There were clearance issues everywhere.

No the stands and mounts are different between the 6, SBC and BBC. Plus the BBC 71 down are different from the 72 and again different for 73 up. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=442919

Re: 67 454 swap?
we used 74 mounts in dads truck, they are the same as the 73 mounts, we dropped the motor in and put the headers on and dry fitted everything a dne where the motor landed and everything clared fine, we drill all new hales and bolted it down, we had to move the frame mount for the clutch setup back some and redrilled the holes, all works perfect, those mounts conform at the bottom with the cross member really well, i also have a 70 that has a 454 on 72 mounts and it has a low hump floor but im running a beefed up turbo 350, i ran a turbo 400 in it when it was a long bed and had to drop the tranny mount under the frame to clear the floor,

Re: 67 454 swap?
c10srule- thanks we will be using all the 73 stuff now that you said yall did the exact same thing but with a vortec 454. we are going to do the mock up with a plastic BB with our oil pan and valve covers. We were figuring e had to use electric fans cause clearance issues but now we know. thanks again.

Re: 67 454 swap?
Remember there is a difference between the 2wd and the 4wd engine placement, the 4wd truck engines sit alot farther back in the compartment to make room for the front axel and drive shaft,I had to use a 1 hump camaro oil pan and stock valve covers and had to dent the firewal for the HEI to fit, Its a very tight squeeze, putting a Big Block in a 2wd is a piece of cake compared to a 4wd.
Edit: Just noticed you did not say it was a 4x4,,funny,,just got a letter from a different guy asking about putting a 454 in a 67 4x4,,thought this was You! Last edited by Davemotohead; 11-20-2012 at 12:27 PM. |

Re: 67 454 swap?
73-87 towers should work fine. Its the 72's that have problems with them

Re: 67 454 swap?
Good luck with your build.
Mine is a 68 and I put a 496 in mine with a Tremec TKO600 5 speed. I use a long water pump, factory clutch fan, tall valve covers, and power brakes. I mocked up everything and did not use the forward frame holes and neither the rear frame holes. Drilled holes for mine right between the two. I use 68 BB towers. Adequate clearance for the fan and radiator. HEI distributor has adequate room. The truck was a tall hump (I6 and granny 4 speed) and the Tremec fits just fine. Made my own transmission cross brace, custom drive shaft. I run headers and a hydraulic clutch. I would recommend Chevelle headers as all truck headers hang too low for a lowered ride.

Re: 67 454 swap?
Man i bet that 496 wih the 5 speed is sick. We are gonna put a 871 blower and run 2 750 carbs. We are gonna go for 750 hp and 800 to 850 torque. Will the th400 hold up to that or will we have to get it built up, and what other stuff are we gonna have to do to hold up to that HP and Torque? Will we need to 4 link and stronger trailing arms? build the diff too? Should we run a posi rear end?

Re: 67 454 swap?
The truck also came with Hooker Comp headers, will those work or will we have to run shortys?

Re: 67 454 swap?
dont know that the tranny will handle all that torque, not sure how much you can throw at these rearends, they are pretty stout, for added insurance id run c clip eliminaters for sure and a cover with the bolts that tighten on your bearing caps, i know for sure the trailing arms will come apart on you, had a pair come apart on me me with only a 500hp 454, thats a lot of torque to be putting to the pavement, definately wont be for the weak at heart, will make for a fun ride, mine is only around 575 hp and it roasts the tires in all three gears,

Re: 67 454 swap?

Re: 67 454 swap?
It's my understanding that the guy in the HP section with the 67 that was on PINKS was running in the 9's for the 1/4 with the stock trailing arm setup. If you are concerned about them spitting, just tack them together.

Re: 67 454 swap?
my 70 swb had a 250 straight six w/powerglide factory
I needed a little more grunt for towing... fitted a warmed up 454 with roller valve trane, headers, alum intake ect. ,400turbo I swapped the mounts and stands from a 1974 chev half ton, just drilled new holes in the frame after placement was good... switched to a 4-row radiator and even used the old 6 cyl radiator shroud had a one piece drive shaft built with a slip spline, and got rid of the 2 piece with carrier.... worked out nicely

Re: 67 454 swap?
awesome. will the small hump be a problem? are we gonna have to cut the seam where it meets the cab? or beat it flat? did your drive shaft fit in the th400 or did you have to use the th400 end and other drive shaft?
