steering tube, shifter mix up. help please

My truck (58) had a earlier steering wheel (55-56) when I bought it. Now I have a problem. I have a 58 wheel but I'm not sure what shifter rod to use. I have both the short and long shifter rod . My question is which do I use? I measured the steering tube and it's 26 1/2".

Re: steering tube, shifter mix up. help please

That measurement was from floor to top of tube not shaft inside.
