Neutral safety switch
I'm wiring my truck and get to he part about neutral safety switch and there is not one on my column it's 1972 350 automatic. Any ideas? I'm lost.

Did you look on top of the column near the firewall? If its not there someone may have removed it. Has the column been shortened, pushed through the firewall? If so it may be in the engine compartment near the firewall. You can still get a new one from LMC, Classic Parts, etc

if the truck was originally a manual tranny truck they did not have neutral safty switches

The neutral safety switch for your 72 should look close to the photo I attached. There should also be a thin rod that slides into it from higher up the column. Like others mentioned, it should be mounted inside the cab, low on the steering column. The rod moves and tells the switch what position the shift selector is in and will not supply power to the starter from the ignition switch when the selector is not in park or neutral.
The wires for the neutral safety side of the switch will be purple. The switch also provides power to the back up lights. Hope this helps. |
