Rock Auto Parts
I just purchased a 1987 GMC K2500 5.7L Auto, Reg cab truck. I am going to put it to use as a back up plow truck and a someday potential toy. The truck saw an older restoration so the body is in good shape. I am looking to rebuild the driveline, brakes, and suspension. I usually purchase everything from NAPA for my other vehicles. But for this one I was looking at Rock Auto. I did a search on here for reviews. I see they have some rediculiously cheap no name parts and some really good pricing on brand name stuff. Is the good stuff anywhere near the same quality as what I would get locally? For examply the Moog Problem solver ball joints are almost half of the auto parts store price and premioum brake pads are half as well. After I put together a list of what I am going to purchase it comes out to a 40% savings, but is it really worth it of is it just junk?

Re: Rock Auto Parts
I prefer to go to an auto parts store with customer service and quicker response should they screw up purchasing from Rock Auto could potentially leave you with a non running truck for over a week if they mess up

Re: Rock Auto Parts
I agree with old rusty C10,I buy all my new parts from the local napa dealer, they own the business, local guys, small town...under 5000 people. They know me by first name and the Money stays local, not half way across the continent. If I have trouble with a part,it's been replaced no questions asked...that is worth it to me right there!! I know it's more money but I like to support someone who lives in my community....

Re: Rock Auto Parts
I shop mostly from Rock Auto. Simple as pie, I take exact part and part numbers from my local store and compare to Rock Auto. Rock Auto is always 30 plus percent cheaper than local. I'm loyal, but I can't be that loyal to my locals. That adds up to thousands of dollars saved by using Rock Auto over local when building a truck like I do.

Re: Rock Auto Parts
I print out Rock Auto prices and then go the local parts store. I know the manager. He can sometimes match the price for the same part!! Print out the part you need. Be sure it has a OEM part number. Take to the local parts store and see if they have it. Since some have price matching policies, without telling you, they will drop the price.

Re: Rock Auto Parts
i have a corporate account at napa and it saves me ton of money under their master installer discount program, however you still cant beat rockauto sometimes and they are located within a half hour of my house so i generally get next day delivery and its technically still local money for me so i win win win

Re: Rock Auto Parts
If I need it today, I'll buy it local, otherwise I'll order it from Rockauto. Some of the parts that I've needed, it I bought them from the local parts store, would have been ordered anyway. So I'll tell the local parts store I'm going to look around and usually what I end up doing is ordering from Rockauto.
Usually most of my Rockauto purchases come within a couple of days, so this works most of the time. |

Re: Rock Auto Parts
I prefer AC Delco parts unless they are way too high priced. Rock Auto has some ACD parts, but for OEM parts in most cases these sources are better:
oehq.com oewarehouse.com autopartstomorrow.com gmpartsdirect (but high shipping cost) Also, I check Amazon, google search, and Ebay for OEM parts at good prices. Amazon has been getting a lot of my business lately. |

Re: Rock Auto Parts
I started buying alot of parts from RockAuto a few years ago, never had any problems with them sending the wrong parts and the prices are usually alot cheaper than the parts stores.

Re: Rock Auto Parts
The only knock I've ever heard on Rock Auto is that you order may ship from multiple locations and incur multiple shipping charges.
If you have an Advance Auto in your area, you can go online and they will match Rock Auto's pricing on the same parts and shipping is free if you spend $75. If you have a problem, you can take it back to the store. In addition, they almost always have a discount promo, many don't expire after they come off the website. Sometimes they will let you use a promo code on a price match, sometimes they won't. My favorites are "Big30" and "Big50. Haven't used them in a while so don't know if they still work, but it's worth a try.

Re: Rock Auto Parts
All the brand name parts you see on Rockauto are the same brands and parts you would get from Napa.
When I did my TPI conversion I purchased the bulk of the parts from Rockauto. It was just soo much cheaper. The EFI fuel tank was over $200 from a local store, the Rockauto price was $68 for the same Spectra tank. Shipping wasn't so bad either. Some parts are just easier and the price comes out about the same locally. |

Re: Rock Auto Parts
Been using Rock Auto for my 77 p10 parts . Its not a daily driver so waiting not a big deal
I was able to get a full tuneup (cap.rotor, wires, plugs, pcv, fuel filter, crankcase filter, air filter and AC Delco oil filter )worth of parts , front , rear brake shoes and pads plus the rear hardware kit for the parking brake with wheel clys and springs to my door for $84 . Most of the stuff was wholesaler closeout, private label stuff like Big "A" autoparts boxed Wix air filter but the plug wires were NAPA the cap and rotor were KEM and Standard the brake hardware was Wagner A lot of the boxes had a lot of shelf wear and yellowed . As for the multiple shipping issues , put what you really need into the cart then when you look up the rest of the stuff it will show what will come from the same warehouse so you can pick something that's listed for a little more but still save a good amount I also shop Amazon for stuff too as I needed both rear axle shafts for it as they were repair bearing worn out too . I was able to get them to my door for $109 each side. All the local places needed to order them also and the cheapest was $179 each plus shipping to them. |
