1979 chevy custom console build

My 16 year old brother has a 1979 Chevy silverado monster truck named "Olive" hence the color. This was his dream truck and we bought it this way restored but the interior isn't as nice as the outside so were already have brand new lime/black racing seats, new custom camo floor mats, and pedal covers along with the custom center console were building which is what this thread is about. These pics are of the truck before we started working on it.

Re: 1979 chevy custom console build

From the picture it does look to be pretty straight. Nice truck. Whats your plans for the 4x4 stick in the floor? What plans do you have for the speakers?

Re: 1979 chevy custom console build

The speakers have already been installed by a professional, front left/right kick panel and rear left/right behind the seats mounted in the corners of the cab. As far as the 4x4 stick the linkage is all messed up last time we tried to move it we had to get somebody to fix it. So I spent a lot of time thinking about it and the lowest part in the curve on it will hold the cup holders, that way we can leave the stick as it is since it's a street only truck for us. We have also built it so that it will lift out extremely easy if we ever need to get to the stick. I will also be posting updated pics of that also.

Also right below the top curve we will be cutting that and turning it into a lid to access the inner compartment.

Re: 1979 chevy custom console build

This is the updated pics of the modifications that make it easy to remove it from the truck. We angled the rear, and the bottom drop downs so that it could be lifted from the rear without hitting any of it's surroundings.

Taking that corner down on tha right side may aid in easy removal & lessen tha chances of jacking tha bottom of ya dach pad up also..i like where this is going..

No it's not an old bookcase is was 4x8 sheets of whatever kind of wood that is. I think it's used for flooring, cabinets, and walls sometimes.

I have definitely already taken that into consideration and I think it's about a 1/4 in. below the dash but I will probably end up taking it down more since I will be adding the surface to the console. Thanks for the advice.

I say that because I took a little bit off the bottom of the console after I took it out of the truck and I think it lowered it.

Re: 1979 chevy custom console build

To be honest with you, I liked the center seat better than the console you are building. Nothing wrong with having a custom console, but I think having it go to the dash where the dash has a curve, is going to be hard to pull off. Also, whats the plans for below the dash, the fuel switch and ash tray? If I had that center seat i think I would have built a small floor console for the shifter and maybe add a couple aluminum cup holders. Either way you have a nice truck and I will be watching to see how your console comes out.

The reason for getting rid of the center seat is the lever for moving the back rest up and down was between it and the drivers side seat and it tore the sides to shreds in no time because this is a custom setup. And your right it may have been a bad idea to go all the way up to the dash but I'm taking my time and thinking everything through 2-3 times and I think I can make it work. Now on to the switches and ashtray nobody in our family smokes so we don't need that and the cigarette lighter and the fuel switch I'm going to try and move to the board that will be on top of the console and at the low point on the console will be where the cup holders go.

The seats were in it when we got it but they can bought off eBay for an extremely good price for the pair. Here is a link to the exact ones we bought from this company on eBay and they shipped quick and were easy to put together. http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewi...id=16830578604
As far as the center seat I have no idea were probably going to be selling it if your interested just let me know.

Re: 1979 chevy custom console build

No offense but that thing looks huge for that truck. Ever considered just doing a stock one? That's what I'm going with. Got one from the junkyard and I'm going to use SEM to make it match.
