Who makes the best Body side moldings 81-87

Any recommendations on who makes the best body side moldings? I just picked up a box from Classic parts today and not sure I like it?

It's not smooth looking, it's hard to explain? My truck has new moldings on it, but they were put on wrong, so I pulled them off and I'm doing it correctly. That trim is very smooth looking

I will have to check when I get home, but I bought a big roll of this stuff, and it has held up very well and look factory but I can not remember the name or were I bought it. After about 7 years the tail gate piece is finally starting to fade from the sun hitting most every evening sitting under the carpoart at the house.

I don't really like LMC truck, but I see they offer pre cut molding as a package. Anyone used their stuff? I'm going to drive over and look at theirs in the morning.

One thing I noticed about the trim I just removed from the truck is that the ends weren't sealed and water got inside, de-laminating it. I'm going to experiment with sealers for the cut ends.

i don't know about the pre cut i would do the roll but still not ready for it.....

I think this is another case of "Who makes the only" not "Who makes the best". I can't imagine there to be more than maybe two manufacturers for this stuff who then box it up and give it whatever part number the distributor (LMC, JCW, etc) desires.

When I first got my 85 I did the roll and after I had it painted I did the pre-cut. If I had to do it again, I would go pre-cut. MUCH easier and cleaner look. Very happy with it.... I got them from LMC.

Thanks for the info, was the trim cut like factory and did it fit good?

It didn't have the beveled edge like factory but they are finished / filled at the cut edges and was cut at the proper angles for the wheel well openings, etc. All fit perfectly.

Sorry to be joining late, but I got mine from LMC (part number 39-7031) and it looks, feels and installs like factory.

I used the pre cut; they do have an issue with the end being open but you can purchase a sealer pen to close that off (part number 38-0921 or I image you could use clear nail polish). That was August of '09 and they still look brand new.

Here's how I got them straight, and right back in the production location, in case anyone cares:

I left the moldings on the pickup box in place up to this point on purpose, so that I could use them to guide the installation of the new moldings at the rear of the cab. I also marked the location at the front on the old wheel opening moldings. I temporarily re-installed the old wheel opening molding and ran a piece of tape between it and the rear...





I wiped the side down with rubbing alcohol and then installed the little piece on the front fender (which I warmed in the oven at a little less than 150 degrees for a few minutes to make it more pliable) and then installed the small piece on the cab corner.

The door molding is pretty floppy so I wanted to support it in the middle somehow. At first I thought I could use a 2x4 but there is quite a bit of "bow" in the door. I ended up using this small piece of angle aluminum, with some tape on the back side and a few notches cut so that it could bend slightly in the plan view. I nested it up underneath the two pieces of molding that I just installed, layed the door molding on it and pressed it against the door...



and VIOLA they are all in place. After pressing them on by hand I rolled them a few times using Momma's rolling pin from the kitchen (which I discreetly returned when done) and then installed the new wheel opening moldings.

Thanks for all the info guys, I bought the pre cut stuff from LMC today and its pretty good. They have the ends glued, and for the most part are cut pretty good. I got them installed today along with my NOS Silverado "30" emblems. I going to show this at the World of wheels in Kansas city next month so Im working on little details.

this is a bit after the fact, but my 82 Scottsdale is finally in the body shop and so I need to make a decision on my side moulding. I had the black Scottsdale moulding on it originally but it has been removed and needs to be replaced. Keith had sent me info on a 3M moulding that is similar and I'm checking it out to see if it matches the original corner moulding well enough that I can use them together. If not, are black and chrome preformed corners available that match the 3M

Conversely, I am looking at going with the pre-cut chrome mylar Silverado type from LMC although I'm not sure whether the performed rear corner mouldings that are available elsewhere properly match the pre cut side moulding from LMC. In photos they seem to have a slightly different profile (the chrome edge seems thicker in the corner moulding) and don't seem to align/match. Is that correct.

Conversely, my Scottsdale presently has the black moulding on it. I'm in the process of painting it and have removed the moulding

If I pick up this diesel short bed I am going to have to buy a set of side moldings for it. Probably go with the precut even though they are more. Don't want to mess with cutting and all that.

Definitely go with the pre cut, it's so much easier. The only one you have to cut is if you have dual tanks.

I'm in the same boat. Factory 83 High Sierra with black trim, and I'd like to keep it that way, but nobody seems to make anything that matches my factory rear corners.

I was going to try the above, but I'm a long way away from needing it.
