I have two questions my drivers side window has stopped working it seems the connector between the winder handle and the window mech are no longer connected. Both work on there own just not together? Do you know what this could be and if so how do I fix it there doesn't seem to be alot of room to move I there. Also there is strange bolts within the door what are these and where do I get the to for them? Posted via Mobile Device Thanks shane Posted via Mobile Device

Those are clutch head screws- they're a pain in the butt, but you can get a set of clutch head bits off of ebay for about $25.

Re: 1958 Chevy 3100 fleet side
For a one or two time use, I have used the tang of a file, or large worn out phillips, or a small pair of vice grips, replace with a regular bolt.

Re: 1958 Chevy 3100 fleet side
Shane, sounds like you need to take the mechanism out and look it over- you may have lost a bolt, etc that connects one of the arms.
Oldcouple, I like the idea of the using the file tang, unless the bolt is tight... I wouldn't want the tang to shatter and turn into shrapnel! One other idea is to zip a slot into the head with a Dremel tool and use a flat blade screw driver to get the screw out. It ruins the screw, but chances are that you wouldn't use it again anyway |

Re: 1958 Chevy 3100 fleet side
The internal crank mechanism wears out over time. In the good old days you had to find one in a wrecking yard that was not as worn out, but now you can get repops. In the 70's I repaired mine and it was a pain. To get it out you have to pull the door panel and unbolt the slide part from the lower glass rail. I can't remember if you need to pull the opener rod assembly out of the way too. Other possibility is that the set screw holding the handle came loose and the splines got worn down. Clutch head screws were a good idea for assembly lines, they could take the machine screw gun torque, but I've replaced all mine.

orrieg to the rescue
look for one in a junk yard and next time you order from the states add a new regulator they break and wear out for the clutch head screws; i just use a flat head screwdriver to remove and install them you might have to grind a big one down to fit snugly in there

Re: 1958 Chevy 3100 fleet side
Another reason for getting a new one is the stamped pin at the X also wears. The repops are the whole assembly ready to bolt back in. I stock piled a few when I found them so I am good. Usually its only the drivers side unless the truck hauled around two people all the time. Get a set of rollers too.
