Engine Vin
I just bought a 1969 GMC Pickup. Im not sure if the engine is the same engine that originally came in the truck. If it is the same engine, will it have the same VIN number as the truck itself....and if they dont usually come with the same VIN number is there another way I can find out if it is the original engine? Thanks.

Look on the flat 'landing' (machined flat surface on the front of the engine block directly below passenger side cylinder head).
You should either find: A engine code...or the VIN of the vehicle in which it was originally installed. These numbers are STAMPED into the metal...so a little cleaning of the landing may be in order to see them. They are rather small...not unlike the font you are now reading. Some blocks have both numbers. The casting numbers on the rear flange of the block will tell you the series of engine (driver side) and the date it was cast. passenger side). These numbers are on the top of the flange that mates to the bellhousing, right behind the distributor. All of this is assuming that you have a small block V8 engine. |

More Info:
This site (Year One) has several pages of igreat info regarding serial numbers and casting numbers and their meanings:
http://www.yearone.com/updatedsingle...gineinfo1.html If you retrieve your casting number from the rear flange of your block you can visit this site to find out info regarding your particular engine. The have a whole list of casting numbers towards the bottom of the page which tell you the years through which the engine was produced, how many main cap bolts were in it, and more. http://www.geocities.com/meanracing/...formation.html Good luck, and have fun with your new toy! |
