Seat Swap

I'm looking to change out the stock seat on my '48. I want to keep a bench, but would like something that can lean back more and perhaps lower.

I could go buckets if there is a provision for a middle, so I could take my granddaughter.

Any seat swap suggestions/pics on '47-54 3100's?

Unless you are really short there is nothing that I know of that will "lean back" in a stock cab.

I've probably had more seats in my truck over the past 40 years than anyone else on here and outside of the stock seat the most comfortable one I had was out of a 66 Olds Toronado before they became collectors items. The foam gave out and I didn't have the money at the time to get it all redone or it would still be in the truck.

The one thing you do want is a truck seat with a very thin back and not a car seat as most car seats reach too far at the top and that takes up too much front to rear room in the cab.

I was also thinking a truck bench. Just trying to get an idea of what will work and which ones to look for as the boneyard is full.

Just some info on bucket seats. I just installed these in my 50, they're out of a 62 4-door Jag. The seats fit like GM installed them and couldn't be anymore comfortable. The gap in the center is roughly 4-5" and could easily be filled with a narrow cushion.

Forgot to add..... As a bonus, the seat bottoms are designed to lift off for under seat access, perfect for an AD truck!

I'm not quite there yet, but I plan on using the latest model silverado seats in my AD truck.
It makes for a great bench seat when the center console is up, and makes a dandy arm rest.

Have you measured those seats? The cab of the AD is narrower and shorter. If you're small, it might work. But if you're a larger person, you won't fit between the seat and the steering wheel.

Those seat look great, but they look wider than the AD truck will handle. Do you have the measurements.

Yeah, I'm afraid to say I'm not small at all. At 6' 2" and 235lbs, I know I'll need to cut it down a bit. ha ha
I know I'll have to cut the seat down so it will fit between the doors. Fortunately for me, my dad is a leather worker, so all I need to worry about is the seat frame itself. I was a little concerned about room between the seat and the wheel. Do you guys really think it's that big?
I was planning on taking out the tank, and scooting the seat as far back as I can. (without rubbing against the cab)

You might also want to check out 2nd row Honda Odyssey seats. They are pretty narrow and look good IMHO.

I second this. Quite a few guys run Astro van seats because they have thin backs and are close to the right width. The above post has a console and head rests where as I went with the older Astro van seat so I wouldn't have a head rest sticking up in my window and once upholstered it will look like a nice solid bench seat. Best thing for me is I scored it off Craigslist for $20 so they can be had cheaply.

I haven't installed it yet but there are many on here who have. Like mentioned before, be careful of seat back thickness. My truck had no seat when I got it so I threw in a set of 64 Impala SS bucket seats that I had laying around. I'm 6'1 230 pounds and I can't drive long because its too cramped.

I like the leather astro/safari seat. Does anyone know which years or models had the leather.

I was at a boneyard today and found all cloth seats.

This was a brown leather out of a mid 90s.
I bought a Black leather kit and re-skin it. I also put seat heaters in while recovering it.
There are a couple of different style seat these vans had. Some the arm rest are recessed into the seat back and are not.

Look seats look great. Any pics of them completed, or showing how you finished the side, mounts etc...

I will be going to two large boneyards today that have many suv's, hopefully some leather 3rd rows.

Please send more pics of that install as I have the same truck.

I have a second and third row astro seat I saved out of my 88 astro van when I traded it in on the cash for clunker deal. Both seats are shorter than the stock 68 seat in my C-10 and I am afraid it will not sit me directly in front of the steering wheel which would probably drive me crazy. Have you installed the astro sear in your truck and do you have any pictures of the install or how you did the brackets to put them in your truck
