sloppy tilt steering column

I have an 87 r10 and the tilt steering column moves up and down about 4 or 5 inches in any position. Is there anything i can do to fix this without replacing the whole column. Thanks in advance.

Re: sloppy tilt steering column

You have to disassemble the column down to the loose bolts. Remove each bolt, clean, and loctite it before torquing it into place. Once you get them snugged back up, the column will be good as new. No parts to buy, just tedious work. I used to do a lot of them. Some fellows are intimidated by the job. The only special tools you need are a steering wheel puller, a tilt pivot pin puller and an inverted torx socket if I remember correctly. Everything else is basic tools that most everyone has.
