Hard to start after sitting

So my truck runs really good! passed smog test better than my imports! trouble I've always had with this truck is after it sits 3 or four days, really have to pump it 10 times or so, crank it over 4 times maybe ,then fires right up, I changed the carb about 15 years ago, think the old one was bad, anyways I'm pretty sure the automatic choke is bad, doesn't seem to move the top plate closed, what else could it be? once the truck starts, runs great, did a complete tune up in Dec. Thanks John

Nice engine. Real clean
My theory is the float bowls drain after sitting so you have to crank it till it fills and pump till the accelarator pump gives a squirt. There's some plugs underneath the quadrajet that leaks

Re: Hard to start after sitting

So basically a rebuild kit,oh joy,had a 56 Packard that did the same thing, but worse! had a feeling it was in the carb, forgot ,but where does the gas drain to? intake manifold I guess, luckily there's sooooo much room to work on this engine, need to get the ID plate numbers and order a kit

Re: Hard to start after sitting

I had this same problem and mine was the fuel pump, I would allow bleed by in the pump itself, so the carb and lines up the carb would all drain out.

Re: Hard to start after sitting

Just adjust the choke so it closes when you start it. It has a lean and rich mark on it.
THere's 3 screws on the black cap on the side of your carb. Loosen them and turn the cap.

Here's a link I forgot to add that explains the choke.

Re: Hard to start after sitting

On the bottom the common fix is to epoxy the holes to seal the plugs up

Re: Hard to start after sitting

Another issue is evaporation. The modern fuels tend to disappear into the atmosphere a bit more than they used to. Last time I spilled some gas on the ground the puddle dried in an hour.
