Original VIN# Problem
Alright so I have had my 72 chev for about a year now, I bought it for a project truck to slowly over the years build. When I bought the truck I knew it had a reassigned VIN# but didn't really think much of it. So here I am today, is there anyway I can recover the original VIN#. I looked on the chassis by the gear box and nothing, the one inside the door is the new state assigned VIN.
And while i'm here I believe my truck used to be a standard but the last guy who had my truck started to restore it and put a auto in. I looked for the linkage but don't exactly know what I'm looking for, any help would be awesome! |

Re: Original VIN# Problem
It's on the SPID in the glovebox, unless that is gone.If that's the case, frame rail is the only "solid" hope - it's where Smitty mentioned - kinda as you look down into the engine compartment, should be on the top of the c-channel of the frame rail, iirc. It's not as far fwd as the steering box.
One last ditch effort would be to look under the seat for a build sheet, but it's probably long gone. Why does it have a re-assigned VIN? DMV/state police might be able to tell you the original VIN if you provide the re-assigned one. |

Re: Original VIN# Problem
I thought he was talking about the stamp on the chassis under the truck. I will look in the engine compartment, the glove box is there but the insert is gone ( nothing but the door ). That was my next option after here, I'm going to get with a officer I know and see if he can find anything for me. I was also thinking about seeing, if legally the DMV can release a list of owners. Thanks for all the help

Re: Original VIN# Problem
the SPID is permanently located on the inside of the glovebox door - it's not in/on the glovebox insert. So, if the spid is scraped from the inside of the glovebox door - or if it's not the original glovebox door, it won't help.

Re: Original VIN# Problem
I'm going to guess that the DMV might not be willing to accept something as easy to swap as a glovebox door as proof of your vehicle's original VIN, otherwise they would not have assigned it a replacement VIN in the first place.
If you do believe that the SPID matches the equipment, original color, etc., etc. of the truck, you probably should continue to look at the locations the other members have mentioned for a 2nd match that would help support or validate your claim. |

Re: Original VIN# Problem
Why dont you want the state vin? Is the truck worth less that way?
