Fuel Tank Delete???

Has anyone ever heard of a "fuel tank delete" option for camper trucks? I just heard of this on Fords but don't know if it's legit. My 66 Custom Camper did not have a gas tank behind the seat but has two saddle tanks installed instead. I always presumed that the main tank was removed by the owner but I just wondered if there was such a thing as ordering a truck without a fuel tank. Anyone ever heard of this?

Here's the truck that got me wondering about this possibility: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...#ht_500wt_1182

Re: Fuel Tank Delete???

its not a 60-66 but i pulled a 350 and th400 from a 69 C-30 camper and it had a "gas cap" that was bolted on the backside so it looked like there was a gas tank behind the seat..... i swooped that for my 65 since i no longer have a tank there......let me see if i can dig up some pics. the C-30 had bucket seats and you could walk into the camper through the cab! should have kept the buckets!!!

Re: Fuel Tank Delete???

That's how mine is. The cap is bolted down to look like the behind-the-seat tank is in place. I just wonder who did it. Could it be a factory item? I suspect not.

Its possible thats factory. I haven't seen much talk about campers. Give it awhile and bump the thread every so often. Post some pics. Inside and out. I think you could order a auxiliary fuel tank.

Re: Fuel Tank Delete???

I would bet the tank was taken out by the camper conversion company who installed the dual tanks. Check the glove box option label and if it had some special tank delete it would surely be listed there but I don't see anyway that would be possible since it would have no way to drive out of the assembly line or loaded and unloaded to delivery point. Totally impossible for assembly line process. My C30 C38 chassis had started out a dually cab chassis and the camper outfit took the tank out cut the tank mount straps and holder flush at the floor and cut access hole in the cab back panel a crawl space about 3 by 3 opening into the cab over camper. The original gas cap also was bolted on to the filler neck and slid all the way against the rubber tank grommet.

Re: Fuel Tank Delete???

This is what it looked like after I drug it home from Kansas. Factory air (probably a camper company installed GM ac kit) with 327 and powerglide, ps and pb, radio and tinted glass and 5.13 gears. After I stripped the racoon invested camper off to a bare cab chassis again and got it running, the powerglide would shift to drive at 10 mph with those stump puller gears. I bet top speed was 55 mph for most of its 67k miles.

Sorry about the pictures this is all I could find as I lost my hard drive last winter and most of my pictures could not be restored.

Re: Fuel Tank Delete???

I've noticed on some of my wiring diagrams, and option for "cab or chassis fuel tank"
That would tell me that GM might have shipped some as tank delete or chassis type for the campers.

Would be interesting to know the option code for that....

Re: Fuel Tank Delete???

I agree, HOTFUN. I think it was probably taken out when the conversion was made. Does anyone still run their saddle tanks? I pulled one of mine out to look at it and it's quite a nifty little design. Quite the complex shape. They hang from the bed floor from two large bolts that run through the tank, top to bottom, inside hollow tubes in each tank.
