Alternative to Bed Mounting Pads

I fitted a Underbed Fuel Tank? to my 1958 Chev Fleetside. When I put the Bed back on the bed cross member didn't clear to fitting on the tank. I emailed the supplier and they said it was because I didn't have any bed mounting pads and this is why it didn't clear.

Does anyone know if this sounds right? can i just use standard rubber rather than the actual Bed Mounting Pads? If I can use standard rubber what thickness would I use?

I really appreciate all of the help it is hard in Australia to get advice this website is a godsend for me!

I have the same issue. I modified my bed cross sill to fit. I added 1x1x.120 wall square tubing to the front side for support, then the area between the frame (where the tank sits) i notched it up about 3/4" to fit the sending unit, then coped around where the filler neck is. I can post some pics for you after monday as I am not allowed to work on or be near my truck today.
I havent found a fuel tank yet that is made for the fleetside bed, and some even say that it wont fit a fleetside bed application.

as for rubber you can use old conveyor belt or cut the side wall out of a tire.
you want something with fiber reinforcement in it

As Ogre said, tire sidewalls make good pads and you can stack them. The photos/drawings in one of the truck goodie vendor's catalogs should give you some indication of how thick they should be. Just make sure that the lines of the bed rails line up with the lines of the cab as nothing looks half done like beds that aren't square and parallel with the beds. It seems to be a rockisilly thing to let the back of the bed droop an inch or so to make it look lower than it is and to me that looks terrible.

The ones from Brothers are 1/4 inch thick.

Try a big truck supply house, a rubber mudflap is the right thickness and should be less than $10.

Depending on where you live.....if you have a Tractor Supply Store, they sell 1/2" rubber padding for horses to stand on. I think the last time I bought it, they sold it by the foot. I think maybe like 5 bucks for a 1'x2' piece.

If another quarter inch will give you enough clearance, I would use them. I used them on mine. They were Mar-K brand and they recommended using them, and I think just about every vendor has them.
