Re: Headers from Summit

I bought a set of the Summit ceramic coated headers for my truck. They have been on the truck for a little over a year and have seen maybe 200 miles of sunny dry weather. They are already rusted. You get what you pay for.

Re: Headers from Summit

They are a nice cheap header, they will rust quicker than other expensive headers. I find if you're gonna buy these headers, might as well buy them used and repaint them. They're everywhere in the classifieds here locally.

Re: Headers from Summit

I have the cheap summit headers on my 77 4x4, fit fine have had no issues about 5k miles on them. Used the header buddies to avoid gasket issues. They do rust but so do manifolds.

Re: Headers from Summit

I feel the only headers worth buying are stainless ones, all the steel ones just rust up.

Cheap Chinese stainless headers are 160 on ebay. The shiny finish doesn't last, so you may as well paint them with your favorite header coating before installing.

Re: Headers from Summit

The stainless ones rust also as there are different degrees of stainless steel and they normally don't use the good stuff on headers from China nor the US.

Re: Headers from Summit

I think stainless looks better with no paint. And much more durable. But if you buy it new, it wont need to be sandblasted. Just scuff it up/prep and paint. I have stainless on my truck now. Love it.

Media blasting would be a good surface prep for paint.

Re: Headers from Summit

The cheap stainless the chinese use turns black after a little use and exposure to weather.

This is a cheap stainless header after 9 months on my GF's honda. It was shiny when it was installed.

Might as well coat it before you install it, to save yourself the hassle and corrosion.

Re: Headers from Summit

Have them ceramic coated if you're wanting a nice appearance. Not the spray can stuff either. Take them to a shop. Most decent powdercoating shops do it.
