Parking brake nightmares - Everything is missing??

Hello,

It seems one of the PO's has removed every component of my parking brake system. All the brackets, cables etc.

I've seen the layout on LMC's catalog, but other than that I have nothing to go on as far as rebuilding this.

What really concerns me is the frame brackets/cable routing brackets. So far none of my local salvage yards have trucks this old anymore.

I've noticed the 73-83 Parking brake setup looks quite complicated compared to the 84-87. Since I'm building from the ground up anyway, could I convert to that newer style? I would still need to procure, or make, frame brackets though.

Looking for some guidance on the best route to take.
Thanks!

Re: Parking brake nightmares - Everything is missing??

I just got mine working. It's the newer 84-87 style. One thing I learned is the factory cable seemed to be three separate sections of cable (rear, middle and front). I was only missing the middle section and couldn't find it anywhere. However, I bought a replacement cable at O'Reilly's and it replaced the two front sections of cable. Also, the first cable they sold me was too long. There are different lengths for short bed and long bed.

When I finally got the right cable it went in pretty easy and works great.

I wasn't missing any brackets. I don't think the newer style has as many brackets as the old style.

Same problem here. I'm thinking of trying the Jamar Park Lock.
Anyone use one before?

wraprail - your link isn't working for me

UPDATE: After getting more light and looking under the truck, it appears that I DO have at least the two rear-most cable brackets. (the brackets right before the rear wheels. They each have 2 bolts holding them to the frame)

I appear to be missing the Middle brackets though- unless they are just for long bed trucks??

See picture here

The 2 brackets I'm missing, are between parts #5 and #8 on the diagram. Approx mid length on truck.

My 87 has a line lock which is similar to what is being offered on the link. Mine will hold the truck in place on a hill while I'm loading another truck on the bed but according to my owners manual it should only be used in combination with the factory parking brake.

Not that I'm saying it won't work, just sharing the info.
