ece 4/6 drop kit questions..
Ok, so I went on the ece site and the 4/6 kit lists for $759
I noticed it says spindles require disc brakes The disc brake conversion kit runs $899 I have to have a disc brake conversion to run this correct?? Just am trying to get an idea of total cost it will be to do a static drop on my c10 If I opted for air ride would it be possible to run that without having to do a disc brake conversion?? I can get by on properly working drum brakes, ive driven numerous old cars with them. I have a friend who does custom fab work/air ride installs. So if the parts cost for the static plus disc brake conversion isnt gonna be too far from air ride parts cost I may just shell out the extra $$$ Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: ece 4/6 drop kit questions..
4/6 requires a drop spindle.
Drop spindles are not made to work with drum brakes. You MUST run disc brakes with a drop spindle. Also, depending on your year of truck you might have to consider new wheels as some steel wheels will not fit around the new caliper. The drop spindle with disc brake upgrade will increase the front track width on a 67-70 by 1.5 inches overall IF you have the narrow rearend (late '70) trucks had an option of a wider rearend prepping for disc brakes starting in '71). Re: ece 4/6 drop kit questions..
You can run air ride on a drum setup, however you're already losing 2.5" of "drop" by not using a drop spindle.

Re: ece 4/6 drop kit questions..
Thanks for clarifying Nate. Interesting , I have full air ride on my other car (1949 ford )with drums and it almost lays body the whole way, I thought I purchased dropped spindles for it, but its been years since I bagged it.
Well looks like im gonna have to dump $$ on the whole front disc brake conversion after all. Bummer Still on the fence on what I wanna do with this one, needs wheels/tires and some sort of drop or air ride Other than that im gonna leave her alone, I dig the character of whats left of the the factory original appearance. Re: ece 4/6 drop kit questions..
Both the drop kit and the brake kit come with spindles so that should lighten the cost on one of the kits since you wont need 2 sets of spindles. Keep this in mind when you order so you don't end up with 2 sets of spindles.

Re: ece 4/6 drop kit questions..
Could I run this kit to get a 4/6 drop and not have to do the whole front disc conversion??

Re: ece 4/6 drop kit questions..
Just call Early Classic and have them delete the spindles out of one kit. The kit you posted is only springs, you would need shocks, track bar, and shock brackets to make it complete

Re: ece 4/6 drop kit questions..
If I go with the disc brake kit , can I order it in 5 lug configuration??
Then also order the 5 lug axle conversion??? Kinda sucks to have to blow $1700 just to be able to run nice wheels like torque thrust 2's Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: ece 4/6 drop kit questions..
Also, if I run the 4/6 ece, if I it is slightly raked , would I add blocks to make it level?
Would this require notching the frame? Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: ece 4/6 drop kit questions..
I've got an ECE 2.5/4.0 drop and I need to let out another inch of altitude. I've seen posts here lately of a 3.5/5.0 static drop, and I liked it. Your truck, as it currently appears could do with the 3.5/5.0 drop where I live and not have many issues with bumps/dips. I like the patina on it and I wish it was in my driveway. The disc brake conversion from ECE can be had in 6 or 5-lug versions. I went with the 6-lug because of the wheels I already had, and it kept me from having to worry about 2 spare tires. As for make it level....it should be fairly level w/o any blocks. Look at www.earlyclassic.com and they have photos showing the different styles of drop. Also, it'll still carry a load. If you go with a 6-inch out back, you will probably want to get their crossmember, which changes the mounting for the trailing arms and allows for more movement of the driveshaft, within the crossmember.
I'm not a fan of 20's, which were on my '96 GMC when the youngest son brought it back from NorCal. I'm running 16x7 Wheel Vintique Vette-style rallyes on it and 15x8/15x10 Wheel Vintique vette-style rallyes on my '69. It's a look I like and I know there are many different wheel styles to allow us all a chance to shop. Now, for the '49.....dude, you have achieved "the look" that I love. Shoeboxes are the bomb!!

Re: ece 4/6 drop kit questions..
The stock 307 , which only had 48, 000 miles ended up being damaged, so ive had to totally revamp my budget on the truck. All I really wanted to do with my truck aesthetically was put on 20" torque thrust 2's and a 4/6 static drop. I had planned on using the factory running gear/ drum brakes till I found out the motor was damaged.
Aside from that i was hoping to leave the rest as is. I had not realized 6 lug was gonna not work with the wheels I wanted to do. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: ece 4/6 drop kit questions..
Thanks ChevLoRay!!! The ford has been a tough project, so many setbacks, countless hours, but it should look good once its all painted/new interior.
Im kinda torn, I love the torque thrust 2s in 20's but I also am contemplating my other choice some freshly painted steelies with some nice center caps might also look sharp with the patina on the truck. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: ece 4/6 drop kit questions..
Some COPO caps on some painted steelies would be period-correct. That's just my preference.

You can use OEM five lug rotors and calipers on them spindles. I found my stuff at the bone yard for cheap.

Re: ece 4/6 drop kit questions..
Click on project blank slate in my signature as I installed the disc brake upgrade and 4.5/6" drop from ECE. I wouldn't order from anyone else.... But that's me.
Also... Speaking from experience, install your drop and brake parts, and THEN order your wheels. Wheels should always be the last thing in my opinion as different parts work differently together and plans change just as you've found out with your drivetrain. I'm running 6-lug disc brakes with a set of 20" Billet Specialties SL Vintecs that were ordered to work with drop, rearend width, disc brake upgrade, etc. Posted via Mobile Device
