New motor break in time
So I just put a 355 with in my truck and its about time to start prepping and getting her some run time. So the block is not new but my cam is so what should I do to get her ready to get on the road. I'm getting the oil pump primed soon and I'm wondering how long I need to have her run before moving her. Any masters at this and what should I do?

Re: New motor break in time
I agree w/the steps suggested in that link but will add that break-in oil & additives are a must if you're breaking in a motor w/a hydraulic flat tappet type cam.
I filled the oil filter w/the additive & topped it off until full w/break-in oil. Fill the crank case up w/the remaining break-in oil. Get the valves set as close as possible & timing as well. You want it to be able to start quickly & do the initial cam break-in w/o fuss.

Re: New motor break in time
20 min idle it 2300-2800 rpm. Varying it as Time passes after ten min it's when you know all is well.

Re: New motor break in time
If you want to sit there. I usually start it up and usd the idle screw to keep it there and vary the rpm every five min to splash lube different parts of the cam.
Make sandwich have a beer. Watch the temp and the oil press and enjoy watching your newbies come out wondering what's going on haha Posted via Mobile Device

Keep a water hose handy to spray down the radiator if it starts to heat up.

Re: New motor break in time
Mine was so loud without the exhaust, I actually had ear muffs on when I went back into the garage and adjusted the idle and checked on the vitals.
Its pretty neat to hear it purring like that, and have people walked up and be like what do you have going on in there?!?
