4l80 nss wiring

I have a lokar led PRND dash indicator....can I wire it to use the 4l80e neutral safety switch? .....does anyone have a wiring diagram for the nss?

I used one of the Lokar indicators for a LS swap in a Jeep YJ. It is possible to wire it to the 4L60/80 indicator switch, but it isn't as easy as just hooking up a few wires.

The Lokar indicator is a simple device. It is just 7 LEDs with all the cathodes tied together through a current limiting resistor. The anodes of the LEDs are separate and there is a dedicated wire for each gear LED. Supply 12 volts to the appropriate wire, and the LED lights. You can test it on the truck battery to see what I mean.

Unfortunately, the indicator switch on the transmission uses 4 signal wires to send the gear information to the PCM. In other words, the indicator switch switches ground and 12 volts on 4 signal wires in various combinations to indicate the gear. It's easy enough to switch though the gears (with the ignition on but the vehicle not running) while checking the signal wires with a logic probe or volt meter. Then you can just make a table of the values to decode the signal.

There are 2 "easy" ways to decode the signal from the 4 signal wires to the 7 wires going to the Lokar indicator.

Option 1:
A circuit built around a 3 to 8 decoder/demultiplexer IC.

Option 2:
A relay tree.

Either option will require a small circuit board to be built. If you're not handy with a soldering iron, it probably makes more sense to just buy the Lokar controller. If this sounds like something that you want to try, let me know and I'll see if I can dig up my notes and post a schematic for you.
