stock axles on 79 4x4

Does anyone know what stock axles would be from my 79 k2500 gm truck. I've heard D60 rear and ad 44 front but have no clue. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Most likely a Dana 44 front axle and GM Corporate 14 bolt (full floater) in the rear. Keep in mind that there are different version of each (brakes and hubs usually).

My 79 3/4 ton 4x4 had Corp 10 bolt front, and corp 14 bolt rear.

Re: stock axles on 79 4x4

Thanks for the input guys. im pretty sure my rear diff cover has 14 bolts. how stout are these axles? The previous owner ran a HD snowplow on the donor truck. im planning on running 33's with a 4bt cummins. Should i invest in stronger axles or will these do the trick if i plan on have it has a daily pavement driver that might see occasional mud. If not what would you guys suggest and with what gearing. As always thanks for the help guys. such a wealth of knowledge on these forums

10 bolt for sure by '79. Dana44 was phased out in the '77-'78 models.

I pulled a dana 44 out of my grandpas 80 k20. 61k original miles on an all stock truck.

You will be fine in your application with either a 10 bolt or dana 44 in the front. The 14 bolt is a very strong axle.

My 80 K10 had a 44 in it too. I think they ay have used the 44's in the MT trucks and the 10 bolts in the auto trucks. My 79 Blazer has a 10 bolt in the front .

Re: stock axles on 79 4x4

My 79 3/4ton has the D44 up front, Corp 14B full floater in the rear.

The D44 or the Corp 10 bolt are similar in strength. There are stronger axles out there, obviously, but either of those front axles will be plenty strong enough to handle 33" tires. I wouldn't say you need to upgrade until you get upwards of 38" tires, and even then it would be fine for pavement and mild offroad use.

As for the Corp 14B rear, there AREN'T a lot of stronger axles out there, that guy will take any abuse you can throw at it.

This 80 was an auto truck with the odd ratio of 3.21

Re: stock axles on 79 4x4

The 14 bolt is a sh*t kicker. Comparable to a 60.
If you have a 3/4 ton you likely have a 44hd up front. It has tougher axle shafts than a reg 10 bolt or 44, but if you are going to run your truck hard expect to shred an axle.

I've seen an unlocked front 44 destroy a driver side axle on 31's. we were partying pretty hard though
