LS (VORTEC4.8) weights

Google has gotten me close but I'm trying to find apples to apples weights.
Comparing different V8's for a possible engine swap.

I get the feeling all the old school charts show long block weight and LS sites are mostly quoting dressed weight.

Is there a concession on iron block LS (vortec) weight
vs. aluminum LS weight ?

I already have size specs.

Hey BR3W CITY thanks! I think your post is bare blocks? I may have been a bit misleading (after re-reading my post)

I'm looking for long block weight w/o clutch or A/C or serpentine set up.

I VERY highly doubt anyone has decided to weigh every semi-long block. There are too many variations on what people call "long" in terms of what is/isn't attached.

But look at it this way. The front accessories and dressings on almost all of the engines will weigh just about the same. Every pair of dressed heads weighs pretty close to the same (stock heads, all of them are aluminum). The only real differences in the weights at all, will be within the block. So if you have all that, you really do have all the information you need to make a choice, you just gotta read between the lines a bit.


What exactly is your weight concern? Compared to almost any old iron motor, any configuration of these newer motors will weigh in the same if not less, make more power, be more efficient, and in some cases even take up less space.

In a car that is pretty close to VW bug size I think a SBF makes most sense.
However, have to look at all options and LS is one of those.
Size wise the SBF wins by a small amount. Both have been done.
It boils down to what works best for me.
Best = ease of swapping, total cost, drivability.

I don't need every variation, I do need something to go by. Still looking.

Unless u can find an aluminum sbf then the lm7 would be lighter.

No, thats what the "6.0 Iron" is.

LSX in all caps (vs LSx or Lsx) is supposed to refer to the actual LSX block, the highest cube possible block, which can end up in a number of different displacements. Its an aftermarket only block.

You mean aluminum heads? I found this...

I'd say a SBF @ 460 lbs. then add aluminum heads and it will be lighter than
a LM7 probably not an LS1, once dressed.

In fact a dressed* LS1 is reported like this...


"Total dressed engine mass (wt.) dry
457.6 lb. automatic
497.2 lb. manual"

Dressed means different things to different people. The LS1 was suppose to be taken from a GM site (no longer found)

So I'd take these figure with a grain of salt. something to use for "ballparking it"

It doesn't help that I stated the wrong engine

The L33 is the code I meant to refer to. The aluminum blocked truck engine, which weights approx 85-100lbs lighter than the iron block (*Depending who's number you trust).

This would be in the neighborhood of 60lbs lighter than an aluminum headed sbf, and probably 125lbs or more lighter than an all iron small block-anything.

ballparking to say the least, but any way you do the math it comes out a bit lighter.
