Should I replace the fuel pump pushrod when I install a new pump?

I'm going to install a new mechanical fuel pump on my 1982 454 and I'm wondering if I should install a new pump pushrod at the same time. I was going to do it for sure, because the rods are less than $10, but then I read a bunch of threads about people having problems with the rod install (bent rods, stuck rods, etc). What do you guys think? I don't want to skimp but don't want major install issues either.

You should be fine with the original pump rod, very durable.

Thanks for the help 4x4toy. I forgot to mention that the truck has about 150,000 miles on it and I have no idea if the rod has ever been changed.

You can inspect the rod by removing from engine. If I remember correctly, the big block chevy has a pipe plug under the fuel pump for the rod to slide out of. If you cant get the pipe plug to come loose, I would not worry about it. If the pump rod is stuck in the bore it will wipe the lobe off of the camshaft. You will have other problems. Pull your pump, place finger on pump rod and see if it moves freely. you can also turn engine over by hand and see if lobe still pushes the rod down to actuate the fuel pump. If both look good, reuse with no worry.
