misfire

I have a 65 chevy c20 and I have a misfire any suggestions on what I should look for? or where to start.

Like said, and is it an inline 6 or V8? What type of misfire? Is it popping....or just a slight poof, or really bad popping? We need more info cause it could range from ignition to compression, or valves springs or valves...so if you can post a video that would be cool also! We will do the best we can to help! Lotta great people on here!

if its at idle it's great. but as soon as I give it gas it has a loud pop.

Probably a backfire through the carb...might be running it to lean. try adjusting the idle mixture on the carb and see what happens.

Bingo.....your a man of few words......how did you set the points

I removed the distributor cap. took off the old points since they had been burnt. placed the new ones on and gave them a gap of a match box.

this morning I checked the spark plugs and cleaned them out. I started the truck and noticed that some gas had been leaking from the bottom of the carb. after I turned the truck on it turned white.

Usually a leak from the carb will cause a vacuum leak, causing stuttering, hesitation, or stumbling.

but that would not cause the misfire then

No, it shouldn't. Causes of misfires are bad plugs, even the spark plug wires can cause a misfire if the covering is stripped or worn in places, sticky valves, weak valve springs, burnt points(usually it won't even start), a flat cam could be a possibility, did you check your compression? Burnt valves or worn valves will cause a misfire or constant popping. You can check if you have issues with the head by compression; if all is even then you might have weak springs or ignition issues, if your compression is much lower in some cylinders then you have valve issues or piston ring issues.

Your loud pop could be a lack of timing.
What's your initial timing set at?

Could also be a problem with the brain of the engine.
Wore out lobe on the cam shaft.

All good info but after you basically rebuild your motor from all that 'info' then we'll still need to know 'What's your initial timing set at??

I would also go back and set your points properly....gap...dwell...then timing and carb adjustment

set points first, point dwell affects timing, timing doesn't affect dwell.
