auto trans driveshaft
i removed a 4 speed compound tranny from my 71 GMC, i'm installing a 700R4, anyone know if i'll need to build a driveshaft or can i find one by application?

You will proably have to have your current driveshaft shortned several inches. I would go ahead and bolt the 700R4 in and see how your stock driveshaft compares in lenght. The 700R4 proably uses a different yolk than your four speed. Any driveshaft shop should be able to take care of that for you. Maybe a good time to go with a one piece driveshaft.

yea, the 4 speed yoke is bolted to the tranny, and it's 2 piece, i definitely want to 86 that sucker. i think hydramatic 350's use same yoke size as 700.

I just had one made for my short bed. I think it was 58" and 5/8th.

A TH350 shaft should fit. The 396 engine in my '67 short bed ate the TH700R4 that was in there before I bought the truck, so I swapped in a rebuilt TH350 I had it laying around. I used the same driveshaft with no modifications at all. Only had to move the trans cross member, drill some new holes, replace the TV cable with a detent cable and rebend the coolant lines, and away she went. I would love to have an OD in there, but I will have to have one made a little more robust to live behind the 396. That, and the cost was right for the TH350.

Gas hog, it sounds like you had a 200 4R and not the 700R4. The 200 is the same overall length as a short TH350, the the 700 is no where near the same length.

Thought is was 700R4, but could be wrong. Didn't look too hard at it, as the fluid was grey with metal and there were 'chunks' in the pan. It was toast. Guess it didn't like that big block torque too much. Oh well, the TH350 works just fine. Now if I can just get the mileage into the double digits I'll be happy.
