1975 Blazer top cover rear door
Hey guys, I've been looking around and I'm either typing the wrong thing in the search boxes or the information isn't available.
I have recently purchased a 1975 Blazer. The top cover is missing the rear gate. I'm wondering where i could find a replacement. Will any rear door fit? Does a specific year fit better than others? Is there another alternative I'm not considering? |

top cover? rear gate? are you talking about the tailgate? or back window? or the seal on the back window?

Specifically the rear door with a window.

Re: 1975 Blazer top cover rear door
75's don't have a rear door, the window is inside the tailgate and rolls up. If you don't have the rear glass inside the tailgate your gate is not from your truck.

Re: 1975 Blazer top cover rear door
The current tailgate is not from this truck. What you said is 100% correct. The question is, will any year Chevy Blazer rear door fit; does a specific year fit better than others?

I don't think they changed other than trim. They are still pretty easy to find in the junk yard.

Re: 1975 Blazer top cover rear door
they all the same. my 75 has a 82 door I believe. power window and the trim is different. I got the glass out of a 76 blazer. what helps me is to look up the parts on the internet and see if they say 73-whatever is the same.

This is what the tailgate for a Blazer/Jimmy and a Suburban looks like. No outside release handle, just a key hole switch for the window or a manual crank.

Re: 1975 Blazer top cover rear door
real question is did they modify the pickup tailgate to fit or did they modify the blazer body to fit the tailgate? a few pictures of the hinges while the gate is open may save you some time here.

Re: 1975 Blazer top cover rear door
Excellent feedback, thank you. I've been on the look for a tailgate from 73-91 blazer. Will the same year tailgate from a Suburban work as well? I've included images of the hinges.
It looks like some hardware was removed on the Blazer to allow the truck tailgate to be added. |

Re: 1975 Blazer top cover rear door
I'm pretty new to this abut I did go to my first You-pull-it location this weekend. Nothing there for Blazers, but did get some general parts off a couple of trucks. I'm trying to locate more You-pull-it locations in my area.

Re: 1975 Blazer top cover rear door
you will mostr likely need to remove all the stuff currently connected to the existing tailgate and add blazer specific hinges and spring. once you locate a donor it should all become clear what will need to be moved/removed. the suburban doors will not work on a blazer. it must be a blazer door. the suburban doors are much taller and will not close.

Re: 1975 Blazer top cover rear door
I found some pics I had saved of various projects I have worked on that may help. cant take any new pics of mine as I am currently bedridden with a shattered leg. see http://imgur.com/a/VdcbO#0
for an album of the blazer hinges. in the second pic you can see the spring for the door. it looks like a metal rod running alongside the door horizontally and then enters the door the other end hooks onto a post on the lower part of the door opening providing a torsional spring. the door can get pretty heavy without it.

Re: 1975 Blazer top cover rear door
Someone has put a pickup bed tailgate onto your Blazer. There isn't too much missing if you find someone parting out a Blazer. You are missing:
Tailgate and window assembly Tailgate stop cables and bolts, washers (these mount to the side with bolts, you can see where the bolts used to go Tailgate torsion rods (these slide into holes in the bottom of the tailgate and bolt into the sides with retaining brackets. Use stamped metal retainers and bottoms have plastic/teflon isolaters. Tailgate hinges. They bolt through the tail pan from the bottom side of the truck into little pockets. The tailgate has corresponding pockets for the hinges also. Don't forget you need to take off the trunions and tailgate latches for the pickup parts since the blazer latches use different pieces. Don't forget the shims for the latches to properly engage too! I hope it works out for you, I tried to copy a diagram of the tailgate and all related hardware. I hope it helps.

I don't know if this is any help but it is LMC Truck and their catalog lists a lot of parts for sale for these trucks. There are a bunch of companies out there. If you had to, you could buy ALMOST everything new that you need to get a tailgate with a crank window mechanism, glass, hinges, cables, latches and all assorted hardware but it would cost a fortune.

Re: 1975 Blazer top cover rear door
A little late to the party but let's see if I can help clear up some confusion.
Pickup tailgates bolt on to K5 by design from GM, not by luck or modifying anything. Something not many are aware of is soft tops were a factory option in '73 and continued on in '76 with half cab body until the soft top was discontinued in '84. With soft top, the roll up window tailgate wasn't needed and the soft top option triggered a pickup gate (part# 467209) to be installed on the truck. No need for window tailgate with a soft top. There was an entire weather stripping package with special brackets that went on the truck at the rear floor vs the weather strip on window tailgate. Here is a GM diagram of the factory soft top for K5. And the hard top window tailgates swap right back on. Very simple except they are heavy. Get a friend to help. Looking at your pictures, the Blazer tailgate strikers are there. The Blazer tailgate hinges bolt on from underneath. You'll need the cables and the tailgate torsion springs as well. The bumper needs to come off to remove or install. That posted diagram shows exactly what you need. Minor differences between power and manual tailgates. Any Blazer/Jimmy gate will work. And the tailgate is Blazer/Jimmy only. And as someone said, Suburban tailgate is very different. |

Re: 1975 Blazer top cover rear door
I've got a contact with a 1988 Blazer that's being parted out. Would an 88 rear door fit a 1975 Blazer?
Does anyone have images of their Blazers rear door contacts attached to the Blazer side? I'd like to see what all I need to take off this Blazer other than the door to make the door work. Pictures would be very helpful. Thanks. |

Re: 1975 Blazer top cover rear door
Here's the jambs of my M1009. Not much to it. In the one picture of the tailgate closed, you can see the external hinge under the number 623 painted on the gate. You will need to grab both of those if you don't have them.

Re: 1975 Blazer top cover rear door
Excellent images. are the wide . . . male pieces on the door that slide into the horizontal slots of the truck (your 2nd and 3rd image) fastened to the truck at all or does the weight and angel of the door hold them in place?
