Re: First year for xtra speedo digit
I believe it was at the same time they went to the electric (instead of cable driven) speedometers ... 1990 & 1991 R/V series.

Re: First year for xtra speedo digit
It was in 1990 they started doing that on the R/V series trucks. Already the C/K series (88-98) had the extrab digit.

Re: First year for xtra speedo digit
My 83 has a 6-digit odo but I know my speedo has been replaced...twice I think. I've seen several mechanical 6-digit odo speedos.

Re: First year for xtra speedo digit
Is there a difference from miles vs kilometers?
I'm only aware of the 1/2, 3/4 ton pickups, Blazers, Suburbans having 5 digits (no 100,000 number) up to 1989. And then 1990 on up had the extra digit. This goes for the R/V series in the 89-91 era.

Re: First year for xtra speedo digit
No. Within the specific cluster housing there is no architectural difference; only labeling and calibration.

Re: First year for xtra speedo digit
Doing some research on this and it appears that the years were all over the place. I would have thought there would be a specific year this took effect but appears not to be.

[quote=MalibuSSwagon;6414800]1985 C60 speedo, cable drive type.
Well, I've got to say that I certainly learned something new from this thread ![]() After seeing this one you posted, I took a look through my stash of spare parts. And sure enough, I found a couple of medium duty clusters with cable drive speedometers that have the extra digit in the odometer just like yours. They were both the 80's style 85 MPH speedometers. I have yet to see an older 70's style 100 MPH speedometer with the extra digit though. So there's a good chance that most (if not all) of the big trucks had the extra digit starting sometime in the early 80's. I'm still curious about the 1/2, 3/4, and 1-ton trucks though. I guess speedometer swaps (from medium duty trucks) could account for some of them. And I wouldn't be surprised if some dealer-installed GM service replacement speedometers had the extra digit too. |
