Need help on brakes!!!!
So I've never done drum brakes like these before and the manual I have isn't really helping. Is there anything I need to do to get the drum off to access the shoes? I'm having a really hard time getting it off, as in it won't move at all. I've sprayed it down with some WD-40 and beat it with a hammer and it will not budge. NEED SOME HELP HERE!!!

Re: Need help on brakes!!!!
May have to put a little heat on it or continue to soak with wd-40,the drum is probably rusted to the hub.

Re: Need help on brakes!!!!
I'll try that. Different people have told me that I need to take off the axle nut, loosen the adjustor key or just keep whacking with a hammer. I'll take some heat to it and hopefully that will get it to come off. Thanks for the info!

You don't say whet truck you have, but if it like mine, a 3/4 ton GMC, there are screws in the front that you have to take out?

Re: Need help on brakes!!!!
If they are front drums ( original ) they will be riveted to the hub, you will have to grind the rivets off or remove hub/drum together...

Re: Need help on brakes!!!!
they are the front, they are what looks like the original. They do have rivets, or at least i'm pretty sure that's what those are. What is the advantage of taking them off together instead of grinding off the rivet.

Re: Need help on brakes!!!!
if you grind the rivets off you can remove the drum without removing the hub.

Re: Need help on brakes!!!!
The wheel and the lug nuts secure it.
Back off your shoes. Remove the spindle nut and front bearing. Pull off the hub and drum assembly. Rebuild your brakes. Put it all back together riveted or put it all back together with the hub separate from the drum so yer not always havin to break into yer bearings to do brake work. |

Re: Need help on brakes!!!!
I'd go ahead and pull the hubs. If this is a project you've just started and do not know the history, it wouldn't hurt to clean and repack the bearings and install new grease seals as maintenance.
