NP231 strength ?
Is this case good for a 400 to 480 ft lbs smallblock in a '94 scsb K1500 with a manual trans. , ( 3.73 gears and 33's ), ??
edit, I'm not going non-stop mudding, but will ride it hard occasionally somewhere I can cut loose. Last edited by 68post; 02-08-2014 at 03:42 AM. Reason: more |

Re: NP231 strength ?
I would pass on a np231 i have seen jeeps with a stock 4.0 blow one apart before. And factory they was only in stuff with no power like a v6 s10 on 6 cylinder jeeps.I would look at a np205 maybe dana 300 both of those are strong t cases and have a good aftermarket.

Re: NP231 strength ?
you should be able to find a 241 that will bolt right in. they are pretty tough cases. came in GM trucks as well.

Re: NP231 strength ?
My truck has a 231 already and was originally a V6 - now a stock '85 350 with a carb and headers. All swapped in before I bought it, along with a nice NV4500 trans. (1994 regular cab short bed K1500)
The high torque engine is and/or was planned for down the road. (407 sbc w/alum heads) Sounds like I need to find a 241 to swap-in , if possible with my transmission and w/o buying anymore expensive swap parts ! Last edited by 68post; 02-08-2014 at 09:18 PM. Reason: leftouts |

Re: NP231 strength ?
68, how are you liking the NV4500?
Is it a low or high (numerically to save time, or synchro vs non) 1st? What diff ratio do you have? Sorry to pepper you w/ rude questions... Bad geek! I've got a 74 K10 frankentruck w/ an 85 (I think) NP208 and SM465. I'm pretty sure the cab's been swapped and who knows where the motor came from. Add to that the rear end is probably also not original. ![]() I'd imagine an originally I6 truck would have low diff gears. 4:10 or 4:56 perhaps? Thanks and sorry to butt in! Quote:
The truck was built with 3.73 gears and a 4.3 V6 ( I believe the model would be a "Sport". no chrome but all black trim, grille, and bumpers) I really don't remember if I'd ever bothered to nail down which transmission version ( I didn't install it either), don't think it has a extra low granny and no I don't think it's synchronized. I wish it had 4.10's or even better 4.56's , but then first gear in high range is too low and low range becomes ridiculously too low. It is a great trans , and I had the same trans in a 2000 3500HD and it was perfect for that app. |
