Need help with horn button
Currently I am putting my interior electrical together. For the life of me I can't remember how to get the horn back together to work. Does anybody have any pics that I could look at? Thanks!

Re: Need help with horn button
I couldn't find my photos. Here's a drawing that might help. I believe the cup that holds the button takes the place of the deluxe horn ring on a std steering wheel. I'm not sure why it says "remove 3 tabs" in the drawing. I did not.

Re: Need help with horn button
Thanks for the drawing. Here are the parts that I have. When I got the truck the horn didn't work. I can get it to honk but it doesn't do it correctly I think I am missing the horn ring spacer?

Re: Need help with horn button
never seen a spacer on mine looks just like what you have pictured.... take some sand paper and sand the spring where the brush hits it (cup side) and on the inner circle of the cup side and the steering wheel nearest the center ...that is where the spring hits when you push the button and grounds out the horn relay

Re: Need help with horn button
This piece is slightly coned shaped and has to go on facing the right way – can't remember which way is correct, maybe so the outside edge is raised? If it's put on facing the wrong direction it won't make proper contact with the part that completes the circuit to beep the horn. Anyways, if the horn is working properly, you'll know when you got it right.
LJackson's illustration shows it facing the opposite of what I recommend, so I would try that way 1st.

Re: Need help with horn button
the center of the spring is up toward the driver ....in the steering wheel on the outer edge where the spring sits it is insulated so only when you push the button it grounds the relay

Re: Need help with horn button
Ok I will try it again. Something is making it ground out when i push it. Does the screws need to be tightened all the way down? It seems to work when the screws are not tighten all the way down. Thanks for the help!

Re: Need help with horn button
yes tighten screws ... make sure that there is still plastic in the wheel where the outer edge of the spring rides ...the spring and the main cup can not touch any metal (until pushed)or it will ground the relay

Re: Need help with horn button
when you push it that what it does is ground... and that makes horn go beep beep beep...........................is your spring still cupped? and on a flat surface if you push the center down it comes back up? some of the later springs had a plastic ring on the outer edge of the spring to insulate it

Re: Need help with horn button
I think all the plastic is gone. Is there any way to replace it or do i have to get a new wheel?

Re: Need help with horn button

Re: Need help with horn button
My 62 GMC looks just like that. I put the cone shaped thingy with the edges down(center raised) and I didn't tighten the screws all the way. It took a couple tries to get it not too tight or loose.
The wires were also really corroded where it attached to the horn under the hood. I cleaned those up and now it works great. P.S.- put a little grease on the ring that the horn switch touches or it will drive you crazy sooner or later with a grinding noise every time you turn. |
