Anyone recognize this 1bbl carb?
I need to figure out what this is so i can locate a rebuild kit.
Doesn't appear to be the original: Couldn't find any numbers, just the stuff you see. I do also have a rochester 1bbl that came in a bucket of parts with the truck, i'm thinking it may have been the original off the 216. Floatbowl 7004516 throttle plate 7004518 1.5" bore Any thoughts which one i should rebuild and try to run? Engine is a '58-'62 235 six. Thanks- Ben

It's an old Carter off a late 30's or early 40's GM from what I can tell but they may have been used some on 50's trucks too. My guess is that years ago someone stuck it on because they had it or got it at the wrecking yard and it's been on there ever since.
Google Carter Single barrel carburetor and then scroll down to Images of carter single barrel carbs and look at the one that is an AS or W ho This is an add for a rebuilt W series that fits 37/49 Chevs on Ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rebuilt-Cart...-/321366609990 The photos are so dark I don't know if you can tell much though. Not a good way to sell things for sure when the prospective customer can't tell what you have for sale. Here, I played with the photo from that Ebay add a bit. See if there is a W-1 above the patent list on the side of the carb. Yep, after looking at your photo again I can see the W-1 in the same spot. If it worked good I'd probably rebuild it and go with it.

Wow, wouldn't have guessed it'd have been that old!
Thinking I may try and rebuild the original Rochester unit if this Carter unit is really that much older. I'm just trying to get a handle on which would be better/easier to get a rebuild kit for. I'm going to be getting another 1bbl carb off a '67 elcamino 250 six.. not sure if that would be comparable with these or better or worse option to rebuild and run.

Hello Ben,
If the original carb was the Rochester "B" or the one from the El Camino is the Rochester "M" (monojet) series you should have no problem finding kits at good parts stores. My '55 GMC has a mid to late 60's 230 Chevy in it and had the "B" on it which I rebuilt and it ran fine. Since we do quite a bit of cold weather driving I rounded up 3 basket case "M" carbs to get the "kick down" fast idle instead of having to use a throttle pull. Was able to build one good one but the floats were kind of questionable, and would stick occasionally. Drove it a couple years that way but I finally got around to ordering a brass float and put that in. I never dealt with the Carter W-1 but I imagine kits are still available for them too. First pic are a couple of Rochester "B" carbs I have. Second is the Rochester "M" I'm now using. Third and fourth is the kit for the Rochester "M" I probably have the number for the "B" kit also but would have to look. These pics were already on my computer. Hope this helps---DAC

Better check the mounting hole spaceing. The W-1 is a good carb but came on 216 engines. The center to center of the mounting is 2-5/8. The 54 up 235 used a spacing of 2-15/16. You may have a 216 manifold on that 235.

Good point there You never know what someone may have mixed and matched in the past to get something to work with what they had available at the time.

Good info- i would not have thought to check the bolt locations...
I'll get the carter off there this weekend to start tearing it down for cleaning. Will do some measuring, and get any #s off the manifold. I'm really hoping to be able to run the 67 elcamino carb (assuming its a rochester b or monojet)- but I don't have it in my hands yet to see exactly what it is, and won't for another week or so. So I'll futz with the carter & the rochester B i have here, get them cleaned and ready in case i have to use them.

You might take the outside nut off and see if someone has taken a rat tail file to the holes in the carb to elongate them to get it to fit the manifold. Meaning that if the hole is egg shaped rather than round they may have filed on the carb base to fit it to the 235 manifold. Hopefully that would be the case.
On the monojet you have to first make sure that it will work with the existing throttle linkage. You haven't saved anything if you end up building a complete new linkage to get it to work when you have carbs there you can rebuild and run with the existing linkage.

Its a W-1 series Carter used in the 40's early fifties on Chevy trucks for a 216. it may not fit a 235 manifold. The bore is smaller on 216 carbs even between B series Rochester's.

Guess i need to get the numbers off the manifold.
Its very possible they took the manifold from the original 216 and put it on the 235 when they swapped. Now i'm wishing i would have brought home the 216 and parts, just for comparisons sake. I'm gonna have to eventually get it anyway, since it has the title's serial number on it, and i may need it for registration purposes so i can get the right number back on the title.

Measure the bore. If its 1.625" then its 216. The manifold should measure 1.5"
The phenolic spacer is 1.5 on the bottom and 1.625 on the top. mounting studs should be 1.75 center to center. You could use a 216 manifold but the alignment rings won't fit. They are smaller also so you'll have to eyeball the port alignment. Don't use 216 alignment rings on a 235 they can get sucked into the port and make it run poorly. |
