Think I found a dandy

Bringing this 1960 GMC home tomorrow. One owner 64000 actual miles been covered up most of its life. Rats have eat the spark plug wires and hasn't been started in years. Original paint and only rust is below the window drip rail an easy fix. V6 3 speed on the column, has the original spare and hubcaps. Dealer book in glove box. What do I need to do first to it to get it back on the road?

Welcome to the forum

Yeah, I'd say you found a dandy.....you don't find them that nice very often.
Aside from getting the engine running, I would go through the brakes and make sure they are in good operating condition. The hydraulic clutch and steering would be next on the list.

Very nice, DO NOT lift the rubber floor mat to look at the floors, you will tear it and hate yourself.

Re: Think I found a dandy

Good looking truck. I would start with cleaning the fuel system and getting it so you can spin it over. Pull the plugs out of it and spin the thing over to get the oil back up into everything. Then do a compression check to see if it is good to go. Tun it up and get it running. Next Like Captian fab said go through the brakes. I would replace the master cylinder, all the hoses and wheel cylinders and put new shoes on it. While doing that take a real good look at the lines for rust near the fittings.

You might wanna check the gas tank, you don't need any old gas going through that carb. Might need a flush. Great find, congratulations.

Re: Think I found a dandy

Will I need to pour anything in the spark plug holes to lubricate the pistons first? And does it have a hydrolic clutch. And does anyone have a diagram so I can get the plug wires back in the right order. And keep all the comments coming this forum is great!

Great find!
I would pull the plugs and put some pbblaster or marvel mystery oil into the cylinders.
then put a socket on the harmonic balance bolt and turn it over by hand. Since it has sat so long the rings might have stuck to the cylinder walls... if it spins free you know nothing internal is damaged ( broke rod or spun bearings)

And clean the gas tank and blow out the fuel line. You will probably have to rebuild the carburetor because all the gaskets have dried up and will leak fuel.

Take your time and enjoy the project.

Re: Think I found a dandy

If no one can support the firing order, I can get pictures this weekend. I have one of these at the farm. There are a few on the board and surely someone will chime in. Great looking truck. I would love to find one this clean for a daily driver.

Re: Think I found a dandy

X 2 what 96 Indy said. If the motor hasn't run in a long time and if it were mine before I tried to start it I would drain all the old nasty oil out of it and put in fresh oil including some Marvel Mystery oil and a new filter. This will further help to free up any stuck rings and valves. Do another oil change after 500 miles or so.
Speaking of valves, pop the valve covers and make sure that none of the valve stems are stuck in the guides and put a little oil on the stems while you turn the motor over by hand.
