64 C10 bed issues
Alright, so this is my second post today and ever. I recently bought a 64 long bed from a guy who was in the process of restoring it. I got the truck with a cab full of parts and hauled it home with a disassembled bed. I am now trying to reassemble the bed. This is proving harder then I imagined since parts are probably missing and not labeled. If anyone has pictures of how the bed is assembled I would appreciate it. Right now I am trying to get the cross members figured out. The ones that go across the frame. They don't seem to line up with the fame holes. If someone has a picture of how they are positioned as well as how they bolt to the frame (so I can figure out what hard wear to use or get). Any information would be awesome. I have searched LMC and other forums and cant seem to get a good picture and most posts are focused on installing new wood and I am not to that point yet. Thank you for your help.

Re: 64 C10 bed issues
Im doing this on a short bed now. Theres holes for the rods that hold the bedsides around the wheelwell. Those holes all should be pointing towards the cab. These holes are two per side and are about 5/16 and are in the vertical part of the crossmember. Then the frame mounting holes, I know one cross member has a different spacing than the others, I believe that will be the third one back from the cab on a long bed. I have a 66 long bed up on a hoist if you need pictures, Can do that tomorrow

Re: 64 C10 bed issues
Thank you earl84. So if I'm looking at it right the carriage bolts go all the way through the wood to the sills abs then to the frame.

Re: 64 C10 bed issues
yes the bolts that hold the bed to the frame go through the wood then the cross members then the frame/brackets ... there are some pretty good pics of the blots here http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=484080 posts #5 and# 24 show the bolts nicely

Sorry I didn't answer back, haven't checked in. I see you're at Fort Riley, are you an Apache crewchief? Just curious because of your user name. I'm retired Army.

Re: 64 C10 bed issues
J.rigby, first of all, thank you for your service, and welcome to the board.
Sometimes when the frame holes don't line with the cross sill holes as you mentioned, it is because the bed has been switched to a different year than the frame. 62 beds are very similar to 64, but the 62 frame rails are spaced farther apart, making the early cross sills holes not line up with the later frame holes. If that is the case, you can just drill new holes as needed, but make sure the plate welded to the bottom of the cross sills still sits on the frame. Cross sills with correct hole patterns are available from most vendors. Mar-Ktech

Re: 64 C10 bed issues
So does that mean that the plates that are welded to the bottom of the sills should sit in the frame? If I remember right the plates on the bottom of the sills stick out post the frame mounts. Is there a way I can tell if I have a different frame or the wrong sills? Also the guy I bought the truck from had the bed in it. So it should work just can't figure out how, especially since I'm missing parts and hardware. Any suggestions?

Re: 64 C10 bed issues
Yes the plates on the bottom of the cross sills basically sit right on the frame and the mounts that are on the frame. There are rubber pads that you can buy that go between the cross sills and the frame/mounts. I have never seen a factory truck with them, but others have. Some of the plates on the cross sills will overhang the frame or the mount some, but as long as the holes line up, you're good. Also the mounts that are spot welded to the rear cross sill are supposed to sit on top of the frame. Take a close look at the pics that earl84 and 60-66 posted above.

Re: 64 C10 bed issues
So I've come to the conclusion that either I have the wrong bed sills or I'm am a complete idiot. When I put the bed sills across the frame the plates sit more to the outside of the frame and none of the holes seem to line up. So what I'll do is put the sills across the frame and post the pictures and see if you guys can help me figure this out. Like I mentioned earlier the guy I bought the truck from had the bed on. So I'm thinking I'm doing something wrong.

Re: 64 C10 bed issues
Like Mar K says, you might have an earlier bed. If you can post a picture of the center stake pocket I can possibly ID the bedsides if they were changed. Take the picture of the inside surface looking toward the front like you were sitting on the tailgate looking forward at the center stake pocket. They changed the way it was formed in 1963

Re: 64 C10 bed issues
I'll take pictures of those also. My bed is in pieces, so I'll take a bunch of pictures if the frame, bedsides and sills. Hopefully if I take enough pictures I'll give everyone a good idea of my situation.

Final pictures of cross sills and bed sides. I hope I have given enough info to figure this out.

Re: 64 C10 bed issues
Those are definitely the early bedsides, 1960-1962 . I will post some pictures of what the difference is later. The bedsides themselves will work fine, another thing that sticks out is the early style inner fenders, definitely from 1960-1962 . You just need to find different cross sills from 1963-1966.
