Brake controller

Lookin to go buy a travel trailer next week and need a brake controller I have a 2009 silverado wit the towing package. What is the best way to go about getting a brake controller. Online? Auto parts store? Or a trailer store. And what do you guys recommend and what do I need to look for. I assume it just plugs into my dash

Thanks

Chris

Re: Brake controller

GMT 900 trucks with the Tow package are Prewired but NOT plug & play.

You have to wire the controller in under the dash, The harness is taped up to the large bundle of wires under the dash, The wires will have tags on them to identify what they are, Splice in the controller, Not all controllers have an included harness. A GMT 800 adapter harness will work, Or a universal harness. (Call before ordering)

To get power to the controller, A red wire is taped to the main loom that runs between the left fender & fuse box under the hood. The wire already has a eyelet, On the front of the underhood fuse block is a 8 x 1.25 stud, You will need a 8 x 1.25 nut to secure the eyelet.

As for controllers, I like Tekonsha, I have a Prodigy P2 on my truck, If I was in the market for a new one I would buy a P3 Amazon.com: Tekonsha 90195 P3 Electronic Brake... Amazon.com: Tekonsha 90195 P3 Electronic Brake... It does come with a universal harness.

Re: Brake controller

I looked for the factor wire bundle and can't find it. Is it possible that would have to plug into a port in the control box under the dash? How about curt 51120 controller?

Its under there, Trust me. I've never seen a port for it on a GMT900 truck.

Re: Brake controller

I just put a Tekonsha Primus IQ 90160 on my 2013 silverado. It was simple to do. You already found your wires under the dash. On mine there was also a wire under to hood to connect. But the entire process took 20 minutes and I went slow and was smoking a cigar while in the process. I got mine on EBAY for $85 and free shipping.
