steering column rebuild help
The shift mechanism on my 71 c10 is very sloppy so I plan to do a rebuild. Ive found assorted bearings and spacers from the usual catalogs but I am in need of a "selector plate gate" as it is called in factory assembly manual. There is significant wear on this piece preventing crisp shifter movement. Other than junk yards any ideas on sourcing this? also, any suggestions or tips for the column rebuild itself, based on your experiences?
Thanks

Re: steering column rebuild help
I'm thinking this is all part of the shift tube assembly.

Unfortunately I've never seen that piece sold new. Your best bet is to check the for sale boards here. Good luck with your search.

Re: steering column rebuild help
These columns get gunked up inside over the years and the linkage from the column down to the trans gets sloppy. Disassembling the column and giving it a good cleaning helps. Old grease gets hard. Outside the linkage has a couple of rubber grommets. One where the down rod connects to the column arm and another down at the trans arm. Your trans linkage should look like something like this. The selector plate is not a high wear item. I'll bet that soft feeling is the shift tube is not sliding up and down smoothly due to old grease inside. It has a pretty stout spring down there to keep the lever tight to the plate.
