another 64,66 pickup addict
hello everyone i have been lurking here for about 6 months. Cant believe how much info there is to be learned here. first of all i apologies if i am not doing this right. I have 2 pickups a 64 half ton, with the wishbone back susp. and a 66 gmc three quarter ton with leaf springs and 8 lug wheels. I will try to post pictures of each if i can figure this out. After i make some decisions on what direction i am going i would like to stumble thru a build here on this forum. any how I am trying to figure out which one to start with, the 64 1/2 ton or the 3/4 ton gmc. the 1/2 ton has a 230 6cy and the gmc has no motor or transmision. I have 2 292 motors I was thinking of using with a gm auto trans with an overdrive. Im wide open for ideas and thoughts on this. Is there one of these pickups that may be more or less desirable than the other.

Welcome to the forum
A 292 with a 700R4 would be a nice combo but it might be a bit of a challenge to get the TV cable setup correctly. I believe there may be someone here on the forum that has been successful with that.

Re: another 64,66 pickup addict
Welcome to the forum! Generally, a ½ ton truck is more popular because more parts are readily available for it in the aftermarket. A ¾ ton certainly has a following as well, but desirability really depends on how you want to use the truck. If it’s going to be a daily driver commuter truck, I’d go the ½ ton. If it’s going to be a weekend local rig for going to the dumps and hauling things, you might prefer the larger capacity of the bigger chassis.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

Re: another 64,66 pickup addict
if you plan to (puke, sorry) lower it use the 1/2 the coils would be much easier for that...... most say 1/2 ton on rear coils the other 3/4 ton on leaf

Re: another 64,66 pickup addict
my plans are for a nice daily driver. will a cab and doors from a c-60 interchange? I dont have plans to lower it. I wonder if I should bother with the 292 when there are so many 350s out there.

Re: another 64,66 pickup addict
Well...think of it this way...Everyone and their brother has a 350 in they're truck...anymore the 350 is boring..especially when you go to a car show and yer talking with half the people there and they say their engine is a 350. Your 292 is a great engine...and even with slight modifications can be made into a different engine...for instance...some light head work...a cam..little overbore, bigger carb and headers will wake up the engine. People way underestimate the I6 engine...believe me...V8 ain't the only rout...and to make your 6 banger perform better isn't ALL that expensive either. Nice trucks by the way! Both are desirable.
