I don't have a motor yet for my truck is the killer, don't have the cash though and I'm sure shipping would be an arm and a leg.

I'm gonna have to say, "SCAM". But, if it's the elusive unicorn, it'll be one heck of a deal.

I agree. The photo is in a showroom somewhere, probably not the actual engine.

Is the 8.1 the same external dimensions as say a 5.3 or 6.0?

Nah, it's a big block
If I hadn't just spent all my money on the truck and tools I'd look more in to this. I was just up there on Saturday with my truck, and for this deal I'd drive up there again.

Marine engines are physically the same size, but can be harder to cool. In a boat you have an unlimited supply of 70ish degree water. In a truck, not so much.

Re: CL 8.1 496! For $1000!!!!!!
Doing some quick research just says that newer marine engines are mostly the same as standard production. They say earlier engines likely had heavier duty head castings.
One explanation is that marine engines are always pushing uphill... so they are built heavier duty. Another suggestion is they are the same but marine engines have some components replaced with less corrosive prone components (salt water is a killer for freeze plugs) This was just my 5 minute google search, though.

The 454 exhaust manifolds will fit it and you have to use them to clear the frame on our trucks. You can also buy a 4 barrel intake manifold for them and use an HEI distributor if you don't want to spend the $700-$800 for a wire loom. You won't be saving much $ though as seen in this e-bay ad... http://www.ebay.com/itm/181408992627...84.m1423.l2649 LockDoc

Re: CL 8.1 496! For $1000!!!!!!
There are finally shops that are doing some headwork (porting) on these to take them up a bit. If this was a real deal it would have already sold into Texas, where they use all of these particular ones they can get for pumping something - maybe oil, I don't remember.
Anyway, it'd be a great motor if its a real deal and you don't plan to modify it.

Re: CL 8.1 496! For $1000!!!!!!
I think that's overselling it. It's a variant of the Mark IV series but with very little parts interchange. It was made for trucks. My brother had one in his 2500HD and liked it, though the Duramax later spoiled him.
Anyway, it doesn't have any of the good things that make the LS series so superior to the old small block. If it had variable cam timing and LS style heads and ports and six-bolt cross-drilled mains and so on, ok. But it doesn't. It's just a factory big block updated to run with modern electronics and produce a lot of low end torque for trucks.
