Drain small amount from 700R4?
Is there some way to drain say, 1 quart or half a quart from a 700r4 transmission? Perhaps a fluid transfer pump, going down the dipstick tube? I had to add a little fluid after working on the speedo cable leak, and now it looks like I added too much. So is there some way to drain off a small amount? Without dropping the pan.
If not, has anyone just drilled a hole in the pan and then Just screwed in one of those summit drain plugs? |

Pull the speedo bullet again?
Dump the tranny cooler line into a bucket? Yank the driveshaft and jack the front end up?

Open the drain plug and move quickly. I usually try to loosen it until its just hanging by the last thread and then ease it out by hand never pulling it completely away from the hole. Google 6.4 powerstrokes, We have a fleet of them at work so I have had lots of practice.

if you have the stock pan without a drain on it, the easiest method in my opinion is to remove the cooler line from the radiator and drain it there.

Well now I seem to be having some problems with the transmission. I couldn't get the fluid out any other way, so I did like someone said and pulled the lower trans cooler tube from the radiator. Hardly any came out, so I started the truck to get the trans pumping. Then about 2 quarts came out. Caught most of it in a used oil can.
But apparently that was too much to drain off. Now it wont go anywhere lol. No reverse, no drive. I added back a half a quart, to see if that would help. Still nothing. What exactly do you have to do, to get the thing moving again if you drain off too much fluid? |

Can anyone tell me how all this actually works? Where is the dipstick actually checking fluid level at? The bottom of the pan? What does the pump have to do with the fluid level, at any given time?
I've been checking it right after driving it, but the engine was off. I put more fluid in it, and the dipstick says its just right up to the top of the full line. But now its doing something different. Its kind of like it can't decide what gear it wants to be in. It keeps shifting back and fourth rapidly. Unless you're on the accelerator causing it to go up to 2,000 RPM or above. Or, if you're letting it coast. Between 1k RPM and 2K, its shifting back and fourth too much. |

Oh.
Dude. You check the transmission fluid while it's running. That's likely your problem right there.

Ok. I was just going by the dipstick lol. It says "check when hot" just like my other vehicles. I'll check while running and hot and report back.
