Really dumb ls question??

So I just read a article on fb about ls motors, it showed lq9, lq4, ls6 and so on, these where mostly the car engines it didn't say anything about the 5.3's, I have a 2004 5.3 in my truck...what acronym does it have?

Re: Really dumb ls question??

There is several codes for the Vortec engines, LM7/L59/LM4/L33. Your 2004 should be an LM7.

Re: Really dumb ls question??

lm7, l33 and ly5. might be more.

BTW, LQ4 and LQ9 are truck engines.

Re: Really dumb ls question??

Yup DLW is right, your motor is an LM7 unless it is flex fuel, then it would be a L59. The LM4 and L33 were the aluminum block 5.3L. The L33 is the HO version.

Re: Really dumb ls question??

LY5 and LMG are the Gen IV iron blocks, the LH6/8/9 are the aluminum Gen IV variants. I may have forgot one or 2 but that about covers the Gen III and Gen IV 5.3L

Sidebar:

When we introduced these GenIII engines for the GMT800 program strategy was to have three small block variants to choose from:

4.8L
5.3L
6.0L

There was also the 4.3L V6 as the most basic entry, and the L18 big block up top.

The thought was to try to drive buyers down into the 4.8L engine for better fuel economy and better vehicle base price.

It didn't work for two reasons:

a) Truck buyers want "the biggest engine available" regardless of fuel economy and price
b) The 5.3L outperformed the 4.8L in almost every area, including fuel economy

Bottom line: that 5.3L is a pretty sharp little small block.

I agree, and I was mostly asking for badges, can't really put the 80's era badges on there since most of it is modern now lol

Re: Really dumb ls question??

Sure why not I mean it is an LS motor, however I think the X designation was reserved for their 376 and 454 models but who cares, plus the LSX badges look cool, I think most of them use double sided tape so don't stick it on there unless you plan to leave it on forever.
There are several different materials available, aluminum, plastic and Polished Stainless Steel.
You can also buy letters and numbers separately and spell out anything you like.
Ebay is a good resource, here is a search for the 5.3L emblem.

Re: Really dumb ls question??

If you wanna REALLY pick at hairs;

LSx refers to the LS(family) of engines....lower case x denoting a variable to be replaced with whatever specific suffix is appropriate.

LSX refers to the LSX GM performance engines specifically.

There is a tendency to interchange them. All lower case lsx can end up meaning either.

Check out this link:

If you scroll down to 3rd/4th gen it has every engine code they made, and an explanation of what each one is.

Thanks for sharing, I was wondering what the reason for the 4.8 was, as I figured it couldn't have been significantly cheaper to build than a 5.3.

Of course, this is coming from someone who has a 4.8. I got a good deal as they go for super cheap, and I figure I can always put a turbo on it if I want more power.
