part time 2wd kit?
I bought a 66 4WD. It seems that it has an NP203 transfer case, but it also has lockout hubs from maybe a newer blazer. Hubs look like this:
From what I have researched this tcase is 5 different positions, and fulltime 4WD. It seems the hubs were added after, and that some have part time kits installed. Anyone know how to tell if mine has the kit? Is it as simple as watching the front driveshaft while driving? Any way to tell while it is in place? |

Re: part time 2wd kit?
The hubs are open/lock. The hub will spin without drive shaft unless locked. Less wear on drivetrain. Sorry you have to get out and lock before 4x4. No more shift on the fly 4x4. My 98 Durango had HD 203.

Re: part time 2wd kit?
Most of the time if the truck has locking hubs the 203 has been converted to part time. Shift pattern would look like this. (front)
4L 2L N 2H 4H (back) Easy way to tell is to unlock the hubs and put it in 2H and you should be able to turn the drive shaft by hand. With the disc brakes and stuff on your truck it looks like you have 73 and up stuff under it. I was heavily into 4 wheel drive many years ago and racing mud trucks. We converted a bunch of them. Re: part time 2wd kit?
I got a hold of the previous owner and he knew nothing of it so I ordered one. Right now with the hubs unlocked the only shift position that the trucks moves is 4H Lock (5th position).

Also my truck doesn't have disc brakes. I wish it did, but I will likely be looking for an entire frontend.

Re: part time 2wd kit?
Well the pic you have posted is disc brake, who's truck is that? If the truck will only move in 4H something is broke.

Re: part time 2wd kit?
My 77 chevy was a full time 4wd ,but some one had installed locking hubs on the front ,and if the front hubs were unlocked it had to be in 4L to move , that is because the 4h has to go through another differential in the transfer case.. 4L ( effectively locking the differential in the transfer case ) I used to be able to pull it back one notch (this is 20 years ago from memory ) on the fly and it would lock the transfer then instead of one tire spinning you had 2 tires spinning one front on back .. hope this makes sense ...

Re: part time 2wd kit?
Well I think it is time to take a good look. I think the front is in need of some attention. Look all the brakes over and everything else under the truck. Make sure it is 100%.
