Tachometer install in '62 235?
Hi guys, I have a very basic understanding of how a tachometer is typically installed - somewhere on the ignition coil? But I've also been reading what I think is that only '63 and up can run as-is but '62 and below will need a separate sending unit?
I have a Stewart-Warner tach (just like this one on ebay) that I picked up from a local salvage yard. Has 4 wires, which I assume are for: ignition switch power, dash light, ground, and ignition coil (or wherever it hooks up to the engine). Would really appreciate some guidance for how to install this: where does the wire (that goes under the hood to the engine) connect on a 1962 (C20) 235 inline 6? Do I need a separate sending unit? Thanks for reading.

If your wires are color coded like all other tachs, You should have a green for signal (positive side of the coil) Red for switched power, black ground and white for lights.

Thanks, I understand that - my question is where do I connect the green wire? To the top if the ignition coil (same point of connection that goes to the distributor cap)? Do I need a separate sending unit for my 235?

The signal wire goes to the positive side of the ignition coil. (the nuts on either side of it, look for the positive side) NOT the output wire that goes to the distributor.

Re: Tachometer install in '62 235?
You may want to confirm that the green wire goes to the "positive" side of the coil. It is my understanding that the green wire is connected to the "negative" side of the coil.
I would double check this and make absolutely sure. Connecting the green wire incorrectly will damage the tachometer. The separate sending unit you are referring to is for the factory installed Sun made tachometers and is not needed for the style you have. Take care, Tom

Tbone is right. I apologize. The green wire is on the negative side.
