2.73 rear end question

Hey guys, quick question. I have a stock 2.73 rear end in my 86 stepside now and I'm looking to swap out for a 3.73. Just to be certain, the stock rear in my truck is a 10-bolt, 8.5", 30 spline, 3 series carrier, correct? I'm looking at the Motive Gear gm10-373 kit and I want to make sure it will work.

I had a guy I called to get a quote from tell me that I'd need a new carrier. I was also quoted me $600 for labor only on the install, which is a little insane IMO. Thanks in advance for the help.

Those will work fine with your carrier. 2.73 and up is one style carrier, anything below 2.73 takes another style. You are good to go! and yes, $600 is steep for just labor, $250-$300 is the norm.

A stock 86 wil be 28 spline, 30 splines came later. Carriers split, 3 series 3.43 and higher, 4 series 3.73 down. So yes you would need would need a carrier, assuming stock type gear sets, although you can get 3.73's for a 3 series carrier IIRC. At that point, you should put in new bearings. The labor cost seems in line with what others have been quoted for a complete redo.

Be certain how many splines your axles have first! Otherwise you'll need axles out of a later K5 or burb.

The gears in the link you provided will work fine on your carrier if it is 2.73 now, trust me.

30 Splines are in the 88 and up.

I placed a call to motive gear today. Figured I'd call the source. If they make the part they should know what it fits. The guy on the phone confirmed it would fit without having to switch the carrier.
