Need an Adhesive..

I have absolutely NO luck when it comes to adhesives.

When I originally tried to repair my headlining I used some heavy-duty 3M spray-can stuff and followed the directions to the letter. It all fell down 2 days later. (I had a upholstery company do it for me)

I'm trying to glue the plastic brushed-chrome molding piece that goes on the inner door panel above the window/doorlock switches. Using what's called "LEXEL". Clamped it for 4days. It just came loose.

I'm tired of this crap.

What are the best/right adhesives for certain parts of our vehicles??

You need contact cement. 3M spray can stuff is 'spray-adhesive' & won't hold up heavy-ish stuff.

Clear silicone should hold it in place w/o issue.

Metal to metal I use JBWeld.

Anything not metal to metal I use 3M Weatherstrip cement.

For stuff like your door panel issue, I prefer to use Urethane like they install windshields with. Beware, it is VERY messy and once it is on the piece won't come back off without destroying it.

For the door panel inserts I would buy NOS or even LMC-they aren't too bad. As for headliner adhesive, there are tricks to it. For one the board must be SUPER clean and free of th old material, glue and I like using a stiff steel bristle brush and lightly brush the surface clean. Then, you must liberally spray the board and I would suggest a crosshatch pattern and use two or three heavy coats. Let that "tack up" for about 10 minutes. Next, do the same for the bottom side of the headliner material and DO NOT trim edges until fully cured after about 2 days. Right after applying the material down, gently smooth out and flatten the fabric without getting too rough with it. And, I use 3M headliner spray adhesive.

I used floor tile/carpet adhesive for my headliner, because I used some really heavy fabric. I let one side tack up as per the instructions, the other side I was impatient and stuck the fabric to it wet. The side I followed the instructions on, the side I let tack up, fell down some time later. The side I stuck it to wet would have destroyed the headliner if I tried to pull it off.

The biggest thing to remember is BOTH surfaces need the same amount of adhesive so they bond to each other. And the longer it sits flat to set up before installing, the better.

if you are trying to re-glue an old h/liner chances are the foam is dry rotted and the fabric needs to be replaced

LEXEL is supposed to be a silicone alternative.

Anything not metal to metal I use 3M Weatherstrip cement.

The local store has the other brand (not 3M). I forget the name. Has an aperture-style symbol.

I don't know what model year you have, but my 83 has a piece of dense fiberglass which is held in place by the trim molding around the edges. I had a local upholstery shop recover it and I just put it back in place - held by the trim molding. The upholsterer told me not to try to remove the remnants of the old headliner - he just trimmed off the loose pieces and used some sort of adhesive to glue new fabric to it. I think he charged me about $65.

I used wood glue,reused my dropped material
brush it clean of foam debris.
start in the center,smooth it out as it gets tacky.
some may come threw the small holes,wipe it away.
I let it dry in 3 sections,mine took three "glueing" days

The Weldwood Contact Adhesive is what the upholstery shop used on my headliner and it works.

Now to find out what to use on the interior molding. Overkill is always good.

This is what I used on my headliner in my CC, old 5.0 x-cop car, el-camino, malibu, etc....

When I did my headliner I used the spray. Worked great and still good after 2 years.

You can not use regular spray adhesives even if it says heavy duty no matter who makes it. It has to be one for headliners . And it will say it on the can for headliners. I think the biggest difference is it will resits the heat from the roof. There may be a couple more reasons that I don't know about. I got my adhesive from oriellys and it says for headliners on it. I have done 2 vehicles with it with no problem after several years .
