Question Pinion Seal? maybe? i dunno!

ok.. my truck has been leaking gear fluid from where the driveshaft meets the axle..... how hard is this to fix/replace?

Haven't really looked into this but as far as i know you'll need a new crush sleeve for the pinion to set the correct pinion preload after you take off the yoke for the driveshaft. That, and a LONG extention bar to get the pinion nut off. Someone with more experience will most likely chime in.

RockHQ said it correctly, but be sure to use a torque wrench when putting the pinon nut back on as to not throw the pinion/ring gear out of whack. I had to replace mine and it took les than an hour. If I remember corectly, you will have to tap the new crush sleeve in place.

will have to look at it more before i decide to do it. never messed with an axle that much before, and being my only working vehicle at the moment, i cant afford to have it down for more than a few hrs. thanks guys

Isnt there a torque spec for using an old crush sleeve? I thought I saw that somewhere before???

I don't think a torque spec for a used sleeve will do any good, the crush sleeve is...well, meant to crush when you tighten the pinion and gives a correct preload that way?

Don't forget the torque to turn is in INCH-pounds. The torque spec difference is from new bearings to used bearings.
