The latter. I have not taken anything apart yet but I assuming the two styles are not interchangeable?

The interchangeability may not span as far as 73-91. Certainly for a period of at least the late 70's-91, the axles otherwise have the same knuckle and spindle and thus, can use either style. I may have a later tin style shield, for one side. Useable and not rusted through, but I'm in the salt belt too.

Ah, glad to hear you know this, thank you! I have searched the Internet for hours trying to find information. I found the part numbers but then realized the same part number may point to the two different styles.

I got the axle from the local salvage yard; they set it on the ground and twisted up the shields. I did find a thick one and plan to use it if I can.

The axle ring gear is stamped 10 85 (1986 model year?) and I am still trying to figure out the axle stamping code to determine the year of the unit. Seems to be an extra character based in the code based on the information I found.

Ring gear stamped 10 85 is October 1985 for 1986 production. I'll dig out the caliper bracket/shield I have and image. There are lefts and rights.

I have three caliper bracket/rotor shields. Caliper mounts are good. Shields have rust through holes from road salt. They're available if you're in a pinch but I'm sure that there are cleaner out there.

Thanks Willowrun, I take a run by there this weekend. Think they'll separate the plates from the axle?

Are you asking if they'll do it for you, or if they will be ok with you taking them from an axle assembly? For question one, bring your tools....it's a you pull type place. For question two, they don't care what you take and seem to not care how you remove it as long as you stop and pay on the way out.

Finally took my rotors off today, found I have the same setup as one selling on EBay so I bought those.

BTW, the local yard had the older full cast backing plate on a removed front axle in case anyone is looking for one or two.

My existing tin shields are rusted through; maybe powder coat the new ones?

Did you go to the yard in Brighton or Howell? Havent had time to check out any of them. Im trying to rebuild 2 trucks with the help of a donor surburban, but im always looking for 73-87 truck parts.

There are two yards in Howell I went to, Regal and Miechiels. They both have at least three square-body trucks. Both have u-pick and Regal has a "they-pulled" office too.
