Another cam question
So I finally got my first ride and now I've got to get her runnin right. Not sure what my engine specs are, all I can tell you is that it's a 2 owner 100% stock 71 c10 lwb with a 350 with 4 barrel carb, automatic trans and dual exhaust. Stock heads, intake, etc. I have found the reason it runs rough and is sluggish is due to flat spots in the cam. I'm looking at this as a opportunity to upgrade the cam with one that has improved low and midrange torque without killing it on the highway as it will be driven regularly. Wanting a cam that "matches" everything else stock on my engine. I'm interested in this cam generically referred to as a "RV" cam. Been looking at the edelbrock performer plus and the summit racing sum -1102. Any suggestions or words of wisdom are appreciated.

I installed it in a stock 4bbl 350 with a 350 turbo hydramatic LWB C-10 with now a 3:73 12-bolt posi...I use this truck to tow a 20' foot trailer loaded with another 72 C-10 LWB. I havent had any trouble with that cam. It does what it was advertised to do, make power from 0-5000 rpm... Welcome to the board!

works with stock converter works with stock valvetrain and it is cheap so go for it. On a side note run an oil with a higher zddp content such as a 15w40 diesel oil. It will protect your new cam.

Too much spring can complicate cam break-in, and the stock rocker studs can pull out. Don't forget, use break-in oil run the engine around 2,000 RPM for about 20 minutes to break in the camshaft. ALSO, break in the new springs. Engine MUST completely warm up once and completely cool off for the springs to take a set. If you rev it up after breaking in the cam without letting it cool off overnight, the springs will become weak and prone to failure. |

The .050 duration of the cam in my experience is the best tool to use for determining the appropriate cam.
In a mostly stock motor I would try and keep the .050 duration at 212 degrees or less. The exhaust number doesn't matter so much. I am not a split pattern cam guy for SBC, it has good exhaust ports and with 'vette manifolds and 2 1/2" exhaust that most run on the street, it just doesn't need it. Small blocks need intake help. The old Crane Energizer 266 is one of my favorite cams. It compares to the Comp High Energy 260 at .050 numbers. But the 272 or the Comp 268 are also good torque cams.

Also, I use brad Penn oil in my flat tablet engines. Diesel oil is a close second. I have used local parts store oil like castrol gasoline etc along with a zddp additive.
The biggest key is break in, just as before, but now you need to buy a specific break in oil.. I ha rushed comp cams break in oil lately. |
