What do you say?

I was just wondering what you say when people ask about your addiction.

Questions like:

"How's the truck coming along?"

or

"Going to see it on the road soon?"

or

"This year?"

I need a catchy shut your gob kind of reply.

I believe in the idea "Its all about the trip, not the destination", so I enjoy the hobby as it is, but the questions drive me wacky a bit.

"I let a little more dust settle on it since last time you saw it".
I've had a bad back issue for awhile and haven't been able to work on it. Just had surgery and feel great so maybe now I can blow the dust off and get back to working on it.

I usually reply oh I'm sorry I didn't realize you have ever built anything other than a sandwich. Most people like that don't even have the patience to finish a model car much less the real thing. This hobby separates the men from the boys not everyone can do a frame off in a 2 car garage.

Re: What do you say?

Man I agree with everything said in here. People don't realize the time, money and sometimes frustrations doing a frame off creates. I think that's why you see a lot of projects unfinished for sale. People start them and then realize its more than they can handle.

They're probably just trying to be interested. At least someone cares enough to ask.

Re: What do you say?

Good replies fellas.. and I know exactly what you all are saying. Just like my signature says.. I also had my bad yrs almost giving up and selling my truck but my wife and kids would not allow that! Thats why I have a custom decal made on the back of my window for all the haters that says "BUILT NOT BOUGHT". All I can say is for the last 2-3 yrs of driving and enjoying my truck I cant get enough of the satisfaction I get from people approving with a thumbs up when they see me coming...

Re: What do you say?

My friends understand they have the same problem working 48+ hrs a week domestic duties around the house. The people who don't get it are more interested and kinda think Im b.s.in about owning 8 trucks, five are from 1962 to 1969. Some people cant get over the fact that I don't fish or watch sports. My hobby is in the three car garage I built.

You can always tell the difference between those that are sincere and those who think you are nuts. I had numerous neighbors that were genuinely interested in my progress, and it all took place in the driveway, and heard the comment many times, "I wish I had the patience to do that," or something similar. It was highly against our HOA rules, and nobody ever reported me, so I guess they were all interested. The first time I drove it, there were several outside and they all cheered. It was great!
I have had a few snarky comments over the time I was building, and I just said that everyone has things they spend their time and money on, and this was mine. It was better than spending that time and money in the bar, and it was my therapy to get over a cheating, lying ex, and it worked well for that.

Re: What do you say?

Just tell them "Hand me some money and it'll be done before you know it" lol But yeah, I agree with everything said. Its funny..at my young age..alot of my friends think I'm crazy..like they'll say to me.."your spending your money on THAT thing!?!" And my replay is "Your WAISTING your money on air soft rifles and iphones!?!" lol They get quieter after that. lol When I took it for a drive around town I was getting smiles and waves all over...and my truck ain't tht pertty yet. And all my older friends.....50 and over () love that I'm restoring the truck. So some people like it and others don't.

Re: What do you say?

I never get asked, but my reply would be something like:

"I dunno, hadn't thought about it. I just love working on it"

"Hard to say. How about you tell me when it's done so we'll both know"

"When you see it driving down the road"

"I'm taking my time enjoying it. This ain't no reality show"

"Why do people watch baseball games? You can get the score after the game"

Just look at them with a puzzled look and say, "Done?", as you cock your head and make a face like a dog does
