swapping axles weekend
I had the pleasure of watching and occasionally helping my oldest son swap axles in his 97 F350. He found a kingpin dana 60 with 4.10 gears to replace his balljoint dana 60 with 3.55 gears. Always nice to see your kids follow in your footsteps. Next is the 10.25 sterling to a 10.25 sterling with 4.10s and a true trac, he opted to swap axles because one of his hubs keeps leaking and screws up his driver side brakes. Just bragging on my son. Thanks for reading. : )
Oh yeah, he wants to put a cummins in the K5. I told him to put it in his F350.

Re: swapping axles weekend
Its good to see them figuring things out on their own. More and more I see kids these days not having the motivation to be mechanical or self reliant. Good on you for teaching him that he can do things like swap axles himself and that self reliance is more than taking your car to a mechanic to get what you want done. Its not a small job by any means.

Re: swapping axles weekend
So, he gets it all back together. Both axles under the truck, he put new springs front and rear. Now he has massive death wobble. His rear sits about 3" lower than the front. I think he messed up his caster angle. He also did not put the track bar on or his steering stabilizer. He is going to lift the rear and then have an alignment shop tell him where his caster is and add degree shims if needed.

Re: swapping axles weekend
We bought an angle finder today and measured his caster angle, a tad over 9 degrees. Going to add 4 degree shims and bring it down to 5.

Re: swapping axles weekend
Just got them installed, got him down to 5 degrees. Once we finish the 2" shackle flip in the rear he should be good to go.
