400 sbc again or LS1 swap...what to do
Ok so after blowing my 400 sbc 4 weeks ago we finally got it pulled and torn down to see the damage...spun bearings, broken ring and a bunch of stopped up water jackets. It's the one thing we didn't rebuild on the truck when doing the resto cuz it was already running good.
I've found a rebuilt short block for $600 and heads with fresh valve job for another $200. I also came across an LT1 with tranny, computer and harness for $700 and it has 78,000 miles on it. Here are my questions...what has to be done to put the LT1 in and what's your opinion on the best way to go...back to the 400 or do the LT1? I'm trying to keep the cost as low as possible...

If the 400 small block and heads are truly rebuilt with documentation I think that'll be the cheapest way to go. A lot of guys say, "plug 'n play" but if you already HAD a 400 small back then this truly IS.
The LS is a great option but you don't truly know what condition the internals are in just as (apparently) you didn't know the condition of the old 400. Not criticizing, just saying why buy another pig in a poke?

Going with the 400, if you are positive it is a good one, will be the least expensive and quickest option.

May not translate and surely not the cheapest but I fulfilled a bucket list item a few weeks ago and bought an 08 Vette C-6. Fell in love with the 2014/15
C-7 but budget kept me one step lower. I've been a street rod engine builder for years, small block and big block but I'm absolutely stunned at the performance of the LS3 engine in this car. It's the standard 436 hp model but it idles at 700 rpm and pulls hard from 1,200 to 6,500 rpm AND gets 26-29 mpg if you keep it under 85. I always thought the manufacturer claims, computers, variable valve timing, etc was kind of a crock, but I'm sold. If I have another project in me, it will definitely have an LS engine in it. The paddle shift 6 speed auto is kinda fun too. So there ya have it. |

slightly confused here. (what else is new? )
Is it a LS1 or a LT1? If its a LS1 I'd say go for it as long as it fits the theme of your truck. Also, are you improving your transmission option as well or is it a wash? |

I love the LS engines in my 56 and 72 Burb, so I am putting one in my 48 Suburban build. While going back with the 400 is probably the cheapest, the LS will provide better all around performance and reliability.
You mentioned LT1 and LS1. Curious which one it is? |

Sorry, meant the LT1 not the LS. I already have the 700r4 tranny and is fresh so not doing any mods there. Looks like it'll just be the 400 for now. As mush as I'd like to go with something newer it looks like the LT will require more time and money. I only drive it a couple times a months so the carb will continue to work for now plus all of the top end is brand new anyway. Thanks for the opinions !
